So some guy backed into my passenger side doors and left a nice dent and some paint scrapes. An officer came out to file an incident report, but no citation was given because it was on private property.

The guy has insurance, but has agreed to pay cash for the repairs and rental I'll need while it's in the shop.

I don't have the cash or credit to cover the expenses while I'm waiting for the guy to pay. How do I handle it? Can the shop just bill him? Has anyone gone through this before?

I would just let his insurance handle it. If you get a quote for $500 and he pays $500 if once they get in there and find more damage you are outta luck. Checks could bounce/be fake. Plus you won't need to wait. He hit you, now he's got you worried and concerned, forget about his needs. Call his insurance Co. right now!

You need to call your insurance agency and give them his information as well as his insurance information. They should be able to handle it. He may or may not be good for his word but it is not worth the risk.

Finally got a hold of my mother. Her name is also on the car, and she's decided that we are filing through the insurance agents, so that's what we're going to do. Still going to be a pain in the butt, just thankful it's only minor damage. :-/

Yep, definitely allow the insurance company to handle the repairs. My family owns an automobile shop (we do body and mechanical) and I have seen more than a few cases where the person allows the at fault to pay "out of pocket". There is always a snag. Either they don't want to pay to have the car fixed properly, pay too little or etc.

Speaking of which, my brother recently got rear ended by someone and they gave him $300 on the spot. My brother took it. Fortunately, it was only minor damage and we can take care of it no problem, but I wouldn't advise doing it. You never know what kind of hidden damage there could be. Plus a new bumper and paint can be well over $300 at most shops.

Don't do it, you could be stuck holding the bag for the repairs. Let the insurance company deal with it.

Yeaaaaah, I did that "I'll give you cash to keep me off my insurance radar" bit with a member of CnQ who backed into me at a chin show in Wisconsin. I took the truck in, got it repaired, and contacted them about the bill. I never saw a cent of it. I contacted them over and over and over again and they just blew me off.

Tell him to buzz off and report him to his insurance company.
