i had my male brown velvet castrate 6 months ago . and was told by the vet not to put him back with his partner for 4 weeks .
i left it alot longer and put him back in the females cage 3 months later .
what i want to ask is it possable for his lead in his pencel to still be live ? 3 month after he was castrate?
as the last week or 2 the female has been laying down on her side like she was pregger and today when i got her out the cage she has a big fat rock hard belly . what makes me think shes preggers . thanks

For castration ( neuter ) on animals they completely remove the testicle. Sperm will not be viable after 3 months.

Is their cage close to another cage with a male? Do you allow play time out of the cages that she could've come in contact with another male, even through the bars?

the vet is now saying the sperm in the pipe can be viable upto 6months .
they have play time but males first then females and no cages are stacked so no cant get preggers by other males thought the bars...

I've never had a male castrated, but 6 months seems to be an awful long time. Since you don't allow them together for playtime and the cages aren't stacked, it would seem unlikely that she is pregnant, unless you have a not so trustworthy vet or one that really lacks experience? Some chins do like to sleep on their sides because that's just how they're comfortable. Others do it when they're hot. Is she eating, pooping and acting normal? A hard, distended belly could be bloat or stasis? It's probably worth keeping an eye on.

6-8 weeks is the usual separation period following castration.

Since the male kits were not separated from the female until they were 12 weeks it is quite possible that one of the fathered any kits (if she is pregnant).

I see on another forum that she had male kits that were weaned at 12 weeks of age. How long has it been since they were weaned? If she is pregnant, I'd bet that one of them is the father. Kits should be separated by sex at 8 weeks.

Unfortunately I'd guess that's a more plausible explanation...

when i wean the kits i take them away from the mum at 8 weeks some times 9 weeks due to if they need more milk . then they go in the cage next to her as its a poly cage . then at 12 weeks they are sold or in this case i kept them and they are in the top cage on my cage rack .... unless 1 of them got her preggers at 8 weeks old and i am right the brown velvet is the daddy lol

That is not what you said on the UK forum where you posted:
yes both kits were male away from mum at 12 weeks bang on.

To be honest, this thread is a bit confusing - your vet is giving you incorrect information and now there is some discrepancy around when the kits were actually weaned (i.e removed from the mother).

yes it is .read my uk post . yes i wish i took the male brownvelvet to the vet im useing now with my other chin sooty. i think the vet who did the male is a cowboy they are telling me duff info as you said . im going to ring them tomorrow and see what they have too say .

*sigh* At the risk of being pedantic - you clearly posted that you removed the male kits "at 12 weeks bang on" (from your post on CW). That is the usual definition of weaning chinchilla kits - i.e. the removal of the kits from the mother's cage to fend for themselves without mother's milk.
It would appear that you actually weaned your kits at 8/9 weeks since you physically removed them from the cage with the mother - that changes the context of the discussion entirely.

I have never heard of a vet screwing up a castration to the extent that a testicle was left in place to produce sperm capable of impregnating a female chin but it is possible I guess ............ time will tell.

maybe its best if i dont post no more and delete my name . your are making me look an idiot

i cant find anyware to remove myself. can admin delete all posts and photos thanks.

The longest I have heard of sperm still being viable is 6 weeks. Maybe there is something wrong other than being pregnant. How long have you noticed her acting like this?

Also if you delete your account your posts will still be here. She was not making you look bad, you are taking things the wrong way.

As I said on CW - I am sorry you feel that way.
I am simply trying to clarify what is happening so that members can give you some information/advice/support.

Clarifying a jumbled story is not making someone look bad. It's trying to give us the proper information so that we can give you informed answers. I can see where it would be confusing with when you said you actually removed them, but now that you've clarified, you're right. The kits would most likely not have been able to impregnate the mom at that age. I suppose there's always a chance it could happen, but I've never had it happen here and I wean at 8 weeks.

As far as after castration, unless your vet totally screwed up the procedure, it should not be possible for your male to impregnate your female after 6 months.

I see no need to delete your account unless you are really dead set on it. I appreciate that Claire pointed out the disrepancies so that you could clarify information for us. It makes it a lot easier to understand what's going on.

Lastly, please, don't swear on forum. We don't appreciate that here.

It would have to be a pretty absent minded vet to miss a testicle... I mean.. there are two of them only, and that's the job. They often put them on the sheet then toss it all away.

If there is no certainty that she is bred then really I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. I have chins who lay on their sides all of the time who aren't pregnant, males do and I'm pretty sure they're not pregnant. A firm belly can be anything from gas, to just being really full. Unless any kicking was felt then I wouldn't jump the gun on being positive she's bred anyway.

Happysnapper2009- I don't think you look like an idiot. This was just a misunderstanding, it happens sometimes. Don't jump to deleting your account, you'll miss out on alot of really good info and help. There's alot of people here who are pretty helpful. But, with the mess now aside, has she been acting normal other than sleeping on her side? wanted to add, that like I said before, I have chinnies that do this on a regular. That's just how they are comfortable. Mine have started doing it out of the blue. One day they sleep normal and the next they started sleeping on their sides? I'd still be concerned if she's not eating or pooping though. Keep an eye on her:thumbsup:
