I have heard 2 different answers on this, and I have tried to research on my own, but have come up empty.

So, can they? If they cant, how does the gas remove itself?

i have seen "gas" come out in the form of bubbles attached to poop. the vet told me this is how they pass their gas and that it is a good sign to see that, if they were in any type of gi stasis. it means they are passing it.
if i do see this, i usually give a decent size dose of mylicon for a day or so until I dont see it again.

I'm sure they can get the gas out when they have a little. I'm with Michelle - they seem to rid themselves of gas by having it come out with the droppings...the droppings can have bubbles all over them or have mucus bubbles that come out.

they have to obviously release their gas somehow. Since we do i wouldn't be suprised if they did.

I don't think they pass gas such as air through their butts but I know when my one boy had bloat, his belly was distended and I had to give him baby gas drops and did lots of belly massages so he could get his poo going. I think they release their gas in their poo but it will be interesting to hear what others think.

Isn't air coming out of the butt considered passing gas, though? If it's coming out with the poo it still has to pass the anus... hence passing gas..

I've seen air bubbles attached to poop. I've seen bubbles in poop. I believe they can pass gas just like we do. Sometimes we can control our farts sometimes they just slip out by accident. Air coming out of the butt = fart in my book.

So if we don't intentionally pass gas, if it happens by accident/just slips out is it still a fart? I would say yes.

Just because we don't hear the chins fart doesn't mean they can't. If a bear poops in the woods and you don't see it, did it actually poop in the woods?

When chins are bloated we massage the tummy from the chest to the anus to help move the gas towards the anus so they can pass it. Again air coming out of the butt = fart.

That's just my opinion and my argument supporting my opinion. LOL

I have never seen bubbles and/or mucous in any of my chins' poop. I would think that means they are sick but I'm not sure. Can anyone explain when they'd see bubbles in the chinnie poop?

It was when my chin was bloated...

I mostly see it in my handfed chin, especially in the beginning when his xrays showed excessive gas pockets. occasionally i will see a bubble here and there. I have also seen it in two of the other boys, zucca was a rescue and his was dietary. And one from Jill's that I suspect was just stress, settling in & change in snacks/hay/food....more than likely dietary. but neither one were ill.

I am still trying to find a clear answer on this.

I dont think that bubbles on a BM is passing gas, in the traditional sense, Lauren. Theycant just push the air out then, so they can not, as in definition pass gas. I think it is splitting hairs to say one is the other.

I dont agree that is what it is. But my quest still continues. I know there are vets on this forum. I will have to track them down ;)
