My cage that I just got is almost done. I've been trying to finish it, but a question I have is I have an extended plastic shelve and I was wondering if there was a way to see if my new chin jacob was a chewer. Obviously in a way that won't hurt him or should I just not do it. I've heard many people say not to, but I have also heard many people say if you give them plenty of safe wood to chew on and other toys then he won't bother it. So what would you do and thank you for your help.

I have a plastic ledge/shelf in my "cat mansion" cage ..and the Chin'kids don't chew it... they sleep on it ;)

I have a few plastic items in my my chins cages. My one (Buttons) has nothing plastic in it since he is a plastic chewer, but the others have never touched the plastic items since they have so much yummy wood items to chew on. If you choose to keep any plastic items in your cage keep an eye on them. It you see chewing it's best to go with all wood.

When I first got my FN, i had to leave the plastic bottom because my friend hadn't finished my metal one and my one boy chewed a huge hole in it (after two days only)
It depends on your chin. I covered the plasitc shelves with fleece that way they couldn't chew them and I could still use them.

i had plastic shelves/ramps in my cages before i moved them to their wood/metal cage and my boys didnt chew on it........just keep an eye it and if you see any chew marks, take it out.

i'm sure it won't be a problem as long as you are sure he won't chew on it. you could always play it safe and line the shelf with fleece
