What kind of cage is best for a single Chin? It will have to be up on top of something because I have young children and dogs.

Where is the best place to purchase one and what should I avoid?

What is ok to have in there and what isnt as well?

You should get a Ferret Nation 143. This is just the top half of the Ferrt Nation 142, which is essentially 2 143s on top of eachother on a stand with wheels. You would be able to put the 143 on a table, etc. and there is adequate room for a single chin.

You will want to remove any plastic, as plastic is dangerous to the chin if ingested. All ledges should be made of kiln dried pine wood. If you remove the plastic pan in the bottom, you can purchse them online from Bass, which many people from the States have done on here. I am from Canada, so it costs a fortune. Bass makes higher pans so that the "poos" do not fly out onto the ground, and shavings dont either (if you choose to use shavings).

You can purchase or make fleece liners for the bottom of your cage. Many people swear by them, others hate them. You will need a few sets for Laundry day!

You will need lots of wooden chews, etc. Safe woods are apple, cottonwood, cholla, pecan, and willow. Some chins like more woods than others. Trial and error.

Lava ledges are good for wearing down teeth and nails as well. You can order them online or get them at local pet stores. They also sell Lava Bites that chins love.

You will need hammocks, and fleece items for the chin. This will break the fall for your chin if they happen to lose their balance.

They like little wooden houses, or fleece houses to hide in. There are many stores online that make different versions.

Do not keep your dust bath in the cage at all times. Only 2-3 times/week depending.

Anyways, hopes this helps!

When it comes to cages, the larger the better. Many owners get one and shortly after realize they should've gotten a bigger one. Avoid cages with ramps, laddres, and/or plastic shelves (or plan to take them out and replace with chinchilla safe wood).

Many members use the Ferret Nation cages. Although they are on wheels, this thread will give you some ideas as far as cage interiors. http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134. Fleece is ok for almost any chin, provided they don't chew it. You can get hammocks, tubes, etc.

I forgot to mention, I have an FN 142 for my one chinchilla that I am preparing for. Bigger the better!
