Finally figured out what it is... a Buck Moth caterpillar, and it does sting. Guess they get up to 2" long...

AH! If I found that thing ANYWHERE near me I would run away screaming and crying. Crazy looking caterpillars have got to be the WORST bugs ever. *cringes*

Man, I got stung by one of these Buck Moth caterpillars! It hurt too, burned and made a big 2" purple caterpillar-sized splotch on my leg.

Another photo on a different thread showing the size...

Anyhow, it was on my shoe and I whacked the back of my calf with my shoe to get another bug - and got a surprise!

That was seven days ago, I finally got around to taking a photo of it. The purple splotch and swelling is starting to go down, but it still itches. My lower calf area originally swelled to about baseball size. They say this is one of the lesser stinging caterpillars too. Yikes.

I see them around here too. hehe I think they are neat. lol

I like poking them with a piece of grass to make them move, or touch their twig things. lol The pieces on top of them remind of twigs and stuff hanging off a tree.

Dang...Years ago I found something like that on my nightgown while I was in the kitchen. I ran outside to the apartments downstairs balcony. I couldn't get the the thing off my gown. I'm screaming and dancing around and finally throw my nightgown off on the ground and run inside. Nobody could see me luckily

That's awesome! We're building a butterfly garden this year and hopefully we'll have some cool looking pre-butterflies... or as we've decided... bread and butterflies
