So, we have one of those PUR 3 stage filter systems. However, I didn't realize we were on our last filter already. So, I have some bottled water in the fridge, it says it has been filtered using Reverse Osmosis, which I searched on here, and I know that is okay. However, it says that it has minerals added, is that okay?

I'm sure I'll end up getting the filter refills before they need any water. But, I just want to know for future reference & just in case they suddenly become super thirsty before I can get out.
:neener:

Yes, it should be fine. Minerals are mostly for taste. (Distilled water tastes really strange because it has no minerals).

It should be totally fine. I've used bottle water with no reverse osmosis and a Brita with no reverse osmosis also.

I guess this is the place to ask, but why reverse osmosis? I remember someone explaining it in a thread before but lost it. I've used both reverse osmosis and plain bottled water without any diffrence.

from what i've read, the process of reverse osmosis means no parasitic cysts get past the filtering process. giardia is one parasite that can be deadly to chins. this is why tap water is never recommended.

the Brita filters do not filter out giardia. i have read that the newest model does, but if you've had your Brita filter for a while, it most likely is no good for use with chins drinking water.

Reverse osmosis filters finely enough to get out giardia cysts. A lot of spring water is not as finely filtered (because reverse osmosis can remove a lot of minerals and flavor) so it can let in giardia.

Most people don't know: There are federal, state, and local standards for purity of the public water supply. It is filtered to be safe for human consumption (though not necessarily for chins since the amount of giardia cysts that could hurt a chin would not faze us, and so the standards are not rigorous enough).
"Natural" spring water is not regulated in any way. It could be tap water from a town or it could be lake water. That is why you need to check how your water is filtered.

Thanks guys, that really cleared things up. I'll have to check our Brita filters like Chinnymom mentioned and make sure they filter out giardia, if not I'll have to buy some gallon water at the store or get new filters.

Gorilla, that's pretty interesting. I remember hearing things about that, how "natural" water could just be water from another town or lake. It's good to get a straight answers from people, thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the help! I got my filter refill, so didn't have to worry with the bottled, but its good to know if we need it in a pinch.
