I have a couple questions about my new chinchilla. I just brought her home about 2 weeks ago and I was wondering how to go about dealing with a few issues I have with her. I have been sitting by her cage talking to her with my hand in the cage. She has absolutely no problem comming up and playing with my hand or taking a treat from me, but when I am sitting on the floor and have the bottom level open she really wants out of the cage very badly. She will kind of stick her head down and try to climb out. Most of the time I can kind of keep my hands up to block her, but sometimes she tries to dart past them and today I had to grab her on her way out which upset her so does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with this? My other question is what should I do with her when I am cleaning her cage, I don't want to pick her up and upset or scare her, but I need to be able to move her to be able to clean.

if shes trying to dart out of the cage when the doors open... dont open the doors if you dont have to lol. You can expect them to try and get out. All mine do.

As for cleaning the cage, tactics can depend on what type of cage you have and its location. I have a two story FN. So i can have them all on one level and clean the other one, then switch.
I can also let them out to play since their cage is in their play area, and have an empty cage to clean. But since you just got your chin, i might not recomend that.
Of course.. you can always try while their sleeping.

My Sakka was bad with always trying to get out of the cage, we figured out he just needed more playtime and he was doing good then. As far as the cage I agree with the comment above, if your cage is muli-level keep them in one section and block it off. I use to block the opening with one of the chill pads they had in there cage. I just recently redid there cage where they have no ramps but just wooden ledges they can jump to. Now I just bought an inexpensive small little cage where I keep them both while I clean. That may be another option.

Yeah for new chins would it be easier to just put them in a temporary cage while cleaning? The play are i'm gonna have set up is the bathroom, but it's right across the hall-so would it be better to put her in there unsupervised? or put her in a small cage just until I get through cleaning?

I would use the small cage. Chins need to be supervised when out of their cage and you can't do that and be in a separate room cleaning their cages.

It's getting to the carrier point with my little girl. She's getting a bit too brave and interested in the outside world.

And the hand motion thing isn't working anymore!

She's also very much NOT a helper when I'm putting shelves in or moving things around.

* We do have better luck cleaning and the like during the day.
