One thing i noteced when trying to get starrkey used to my smell was that he'd nibble my finger, and thus my nails. As it was the start of him getting to know me i thought nothing of it.

But he's just had his nose pressed up against the cage watching me like ''oi! pay me attention'' so i went over, and he's getting all excited, so i give him some scratches round the face....liked em, but not the problem solver...offered the apple twig...yeah thats good...but then he kept going passed the twig to my hand...theres nothing in them they're washed clean, and i didn't have treats. Then he tries to bite my nails...is this normal for them? biting people's nails? is it good/bad for them...I obviously retracted my hand as i quite like my nails! But he's going mental for either that...or something else on my hands...any clues?

sorry for so many posts! can tell i'm a chinny newbie!

My chin tries to bite my nails all the time. I think because they're harder than flesh (hahah but true) They can chew it...thus, they want to chew it. This is the fundamental philosophy of the chinchilla.

They love nails, eyelashes and eyebrows! And if you have plastic framed glasses watch out! My Wesley loves to pull my glasses right off when I'm putting my face in for a smooch!

They also love hair ties. Shelly will sit on my shoulder and try to gets my hair tie. She get kisses instead. :)

awww too cute, just a shame i only have 2 longer nails left as his 'get back in the cage' fiasco last night resulted in him jumping between his cage and the wall, the lid slammed down.... starrkey- 1 me- 0. Ill for sure keep an eye out for glasses/hair band when it comes to him getting more comfortable, he is getting confident very quickly! haha

Yes..I have gotten many a Mani-pedi from Trixie over the last 5 years. I have also learned to take off my glasses during play time if she starts hanging out on my shoulders.

Haha, that is true chin philosophy! They are also very keen on remembering each little hidey hole they shouldn't be going into.

Simon got his first taste of nails 2 weeks ago, and now he goes crazy for them everytime I put my hand in the cage he runs over and pulls my hand as hard as he can...which is much stronger than I would have thought! He's only messed up one...so far...I like my nails too!

Nash loves pulling the pony tail holders on my wrist. He bites, pulls it, then let's it snap me...then does it againa and again and again...

yeah Starrkey spotted the new watch....i have a chin teeth imprint on the leather, and Ziora the hidey hole thing- argh! ''no'' *starrkey looks at me and moves on......5 seconds later* ''starrkey nooo'' same for getting him in the cage, he runs straight to the places he knows i struggle to get too as he's still like a toddler, tired, but determined to play!

He's getting beyond the nails already now though, he's venturing up my arm, and has discovered from two attempts just that they are attached to my shoulders- OUT of the cage.... 3am here and he wants another run....i did one with him at 10pm, not so bad, i swear he's worse than me for these sleeping habbits!

I have to wear a name tag for work. One night, I still had it on when I was snuggling the boys and Mr. Whiskers took a little nibble off of the corner. It's so cute; it reminds me of him every time I put on my tag!!!

My Herby loves to chew on my nails! Unfortunately for her I can not let her because I have acrylic nails. Ms. Zoe loves to chew on my nose when I am giving her snuggles and Ansem likes to chew on lips ( go figure that one out )

Yep, fingernails, iPhone case, headband, nose... whatever... chew chew... :D

Hope take my headband off and runs away with it. Shima chews fingernails. So far the baby isn't a chewer, but I am sure in time she will be. :)

lol its the only thing that reminds me my lil guy is a chinchilla, he's more like a sloth or a cat really with his lazy ways, but the chewing brings him back hehe

Another thing that makes chins go so nuts for nails is the fact that, unless you're not a very healthy eater, there is a substantial amount of calcium and protien in the nails.

Haha, that's just like my favourite book. I left it alone with my chin on the couch for three seconds to grab the ringing phone and by the time I got back he had completely mauled the cover and first couple of pages. It reminds me of him now every time I read it. =)

I was reading a book to Rodya in his playpen, letting him run around on my and get used to me, and he kept coming up and tasting it. Now my Irish Language book has got chinchilla teeth marks on the cover, in like 15 different places. So cute. Like everyone else has said, it reminds me of him when I see it :3
