I´ve just checked on my chins and Silver´s right hind foot is bleeding pretty severley and there are puddles of blood around the cage, I´ve seen someone elses thread on foot problems bleeding lots so I did not freak out completley and am certain that is the only place he is bleeding, I noticed his feet were looking bretty dry a few days ago as well so I´m sure it´s cracking.

I am worried, is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable before taking him to the vet? I am calling around but my chin vet is closed on sundays and we may not be able to find an open clinic until 8am tomorrow (about 20ish hours from now)

I have wiped up the blood and he is acting normal, it´s 1pm in the afternoon so he has gone back to sleep which I thought was best since it limits his movement and hopefully stops the bleeding.

On hold on the phone to the emergency vet now but advice is appreciated.

really bummed this has happened to him, I was literally two days away from finding vitamin E capsuals to soften his feet, my poor boy :(

The bleeding may stop on its own. What kind of bedding is he on? I would keep him on fleece if you can to keep any shavings or dusty bedding out of the sore.

I have had a couple of chins here with bloody feet and have found them after the bleeding had stopped. How big is the wound?

He is on wood shelves predominantly without fleece, I am hunting around looking for some now.

The bleeding has stopped, I cant locate the exact point where it has come from on his foot because the whole surface is red and I dont want to touch it much.

One whole level of the cage is wood, my boyfriend is currently cutting up an old fleece jumper to use as a temporary soft surface.

Called three vets and got him an appointment at a skin specialist next Friday to be sure it isnt some kind of infection that caused the bleeding, but I think that´s too far away so I´m taking him to the regular chin vet tomorrow as soon as I can to see if a specialist is necessary or if it is just from having dry feet. I´m pretty sure it is, I did a post recently about the change in humidity and noticing how dry they looked, so fingers crossed it can stay clean and free of infection.

I´ve just been informed the only material we have is polyester fleece, will that be alright?

I also found out which vet I am NOT going to in future, when we first said we had a sick chinchilla one of the ones we called actually said òh, if a chinchilla is sick there is not much you can do about it`but then changed his mind when we said it was only a minor foot problem. I am actually fairly angry about that since this particular place is meant to specialize in small animals.

Omg that's terrible! Definitely don't go to that vet. So scary. Its a good sign if it stopped but it may be a good idea to take a wash cloth and just swipe the area with water to see how bad the cut is so you know what your dealing with. He will be mad but these are things we have to do so he will forgive you

That is definitely a vet that I wouldn't go to. Like Tillygizmo said, you need to lean off the feet so you can get a good look at the wound. You shouldn't leave it bloody and possibly dirty.

It makes me so angry when people just dismiss smaller animals and give them up for dead the second something goes slightly wrong, and that´s a terrible attitude coming from a vet. The vet I went to today was great, she loved the chins and answered all my questions, so I´m pretty happy about the whole thing.
