My girl was notorious for breaking any water bottle she could get her teeth on. Well, since she has been gone, my little boy has had the same water bottle. When I checked on him today though, it looked like either he had broken the bottle or it had finally went kaput on its own. When he goes to get a drink, the water just pours out and runs down the front of him. Hmm... maybe I won't have to worry about washing the pee off of his belly now since he's getting water on himself. LOL! Seriously though, does anyone know of a good bottle that isn't easily broken? I took this one away and put a water dish in the cage for now (he's drank from a dish before, so I don't think he'll be too confused). But I'll need to buy a new one here soon.

I LOVE the edstrom bottles. I have never had one leak on me. They are plastic though, so if you decide to get one consider getting a shield to protect it from being chewed on.

Hmm, I've never heard of that brand. I'll have to check it out. The other ones I have had didn't really leak initially. But they would get abused pretty heavily and eventually wouldn't even hold water anymore. What usually happened was she was grabbing onto the end of the spout (where the water comes out) and she would pull on it as hard as she could until it slipped from her teeth and sprung backwards. Often times it was so forceful that the whole bottle would come flying out of it's holder, landing on the floor.

Oh dear, I just searched for it and I came across a page saying they were no longer going to make them. They have some available on Amazon though.

I love the edstroms too... when I heard they were no longer making them, I went and bought three with shields. Other than that, the glass lixit bottles are pretty good as well... never had a chin chew through those!

I know, its sad to hear, I love these bottles! When I heard that I went out and bought a bunch of the bottles so incase anything ever happened to mine in the future (or if I got any new chins) I would still have the edstroms to use.

So you guys have only had problems with chins chewing holes in water bottles and not the mechanism itself getting broken? Hmm... she must have been one weird chinchilla. Well, actually, she was just very impatient and bossy. I guess she would get frustrated with the water bottle because the water wasn't coming out as fast as she would have liked. Luckily, my boy isn't nearly as destructive as she was.

Mine have basic plastic bottles and I've never had any issues with them. For my guinea pigs, though, I have these WONDERFUL bottles with tops that flip open for easy filling... It makes life so much easier! Chins don't drink nearly as much so I don't think it's necessary unless you have a lot of chins, but for the pigs it's insanely helpful. They sell them at Petco/Petsmart, so they're easy to get.

Every plastic bottle my chins have had, eventually they have chewed a hole in them. Now all of my chins have glass lixit bottles. They are wonderful- they always work and they never leak.

Hmm... I've never had a plastic water bottle chewed in the 5 years I have had chins. Its strange I've hear so many stories of it happening. I would like to purchase edstrom water bottles, but they are so expensive now.

I use the Edstrom water buddies and shields. These have worked out good for me. When I knew they were going to stop making these I stocked up on them.

Okay, well I guess she was just a weird little chinnie then. The Edstrom bottles do seem somewhat expensive, but I think I have gotten bottles more expensive than those ($18 on Amazon) before only to have them destroyed. The most expensive was this bottle that had this little metal stick type thing instead of the metal balls inside of the spout. It was supposed to be a no drip bottle, but it was ruined within a matter of days because she grabbed a hold of the little stick thing, pulled on it, and broke the mechanism.
Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I think I'll see if I can get one of those Edstrom bottles. I think I have less to worry about with my boy, he's a lot less destructive of things.
