I've been using them for years and I have never had any problems. They pop out when they are warm and then they go back. It's possible that maybe I keep it much cooler in my house than other people do. I never force them to stay in the pouch, they will let me know if they want out. Chins generally will not stay in anything if they are getting too warm. They pile up when they sleep in some of the cages...and they always climb out with red, floppy ears when they have had enough.

I do want to say this - I would never do or recommend anything for the chins that is unsafe.

I know this is totally off the wall but talking bout carrying the chins around..my kids at halloween put them down inside of their plastic pumpkins for trick n treat..lol..they were so cute popping their heads out of the buckets and they let the kids carry them around for hours...keep all my kids and chins busy for the day...lol..

I folded the fleece and place it as the base of the bag and wala! :hammock: His ears are no longer red! I love this idea! its so cute to see Luffy inside the pouch!

Thanks AZchin for the idea!

I love the smilies!

I love the pouch idea!

my friend used a little purse with a flap cover, like a one strap bag thing.. it had no windows, and nothing inside, just made out of a cotton material. i think the fact that she carried him around a lot of places for a few weeks made him very comfortable with her.

That would be awesome...if I could take a chin everywhere with me, I probably would. I'd just hate for them to get loose somewhere...

I just use my pouches inside.

but...

Yeah, I think being in the carrier is stressful. When I put my chins in carriers they get very angry or flighty...then going outside and being carried around would make it worse.

so... if you could take your chin everywhere you would? what if your chin was taken places all the time from a very young age and used to it and content with that? i think you see where this is going! :neener:

I'm not claiming that I know best, and you all have more experience than me....
But, from MY personal experience, Kenny likes to be outside.. he gets interested and excited, not nervous. You can tell a difference. Now it may be because he seems to be a tiny guy, maybe a runt? So he has some issues i think, with his brain  but maybe they aren't outside pets because you don't let them? They do live outside, obviously, in the wild.
So if, from a young age, they are regularly outside, the sounds of birds and cars, etc might not be that frightening to them? just my take, because I'm sure I'm completely wrong on this one.

You can't compare chins to their wild relatives. Our chins have been domesticated for years.

They are prey animals. Any prey animal is naturally going to have the instinct to look out for predators and be scared. Just because yours likes it doesn't mean the thousands of other chinchillas will. There is no point to taking a chinchilla outside. They gain nothing from it that they can't have by looking out a window or having lots of enriching toys in their cages.

My point in saying that maybe your chins are nervous, but Kenny doesn't seem to be one bit.. But again, maybe because he seems to be a runt and probably not the smartest chin around..

I personally, don't take mine anywhere..

Zappa - You are starting to irritate the crap out of me. I shut that thread down yesterday for a reason. This topic is CLOSED to you. I am not going to have everybody pissed off again about you taking your chin for a hike.

They do live outside, obviously, in the wild.

Wild chinchillas hide in rock crevasses and underneath the large, often thorny leaves of succulent plants or within hollowed cacti. The judge for our state show this weekend is from Chile where there are wild chinchillas and he said you will never see one outside during the day nor will they ever be out in the open, always hiding or darting from place to place. If a wild chin is that fearful of its native outdoor habitat, surely a domesticated pet chin is not going to feel comfortable when being toted around outside.

Anyway, about the carrying pouches for taming, those sound like a pretty good idea as long as it isn't too warm. I normally just have chins hop into one of my zip-up sweatshirts or jackets so that they can sit close to me while I do other things.

back to the pouches...........when carrying them around where on your body are they resting. basically how long are the "handles". it is an interesting concept to taming.

They usually fall asleep in the pouch. But, you know, any movement I do is just very slow walking so it doesn't jostle them around too much. My pouches are like a purse, the strap on it allows for the pouch to hang maybe a little above waist length.

In the pouches it's about the same as when the chins get into their hammocks or fleece tunnels...and they let you know when they want to come out. I'd never recommend putting a zipper or drawstring to keep them in...they need to be able to pop their heads out to let you know when they are ready to go back.

I have, well had, until yesterday, this extra cage set up in my chin room that is really neat b/c when the boys come out at playtime they love to hang out in there and I can just put my arm in and pet them and they sit on my hand or crawl up my arm and cuddle with me. I know it's not possible for everyone to have an extra cage around but if you can then I say give it a try b/c my guys really do seem to enjoy hanging out in there and it's nice and close to where I am so it makes it easier to interact.

So Basically you get a purse or bag and then put alittle bit of fleece in it and carry them around? i got a 5 year old chin from an owner who couldnt take care of him anymore. I dont really understand the pouch idea >_< sorry i just wanna learn more about this because Carl (my chinchilla) Climbs on me and comes up to me but he dosent like being held and i dont think he COMPLETLEY trusts me. Btw its been 2 weeks sense i got him. anyway, i have animals so should i put alway all the animals, put carl in a purse/bag with it open with fleece in and then carry him around the house? :/ the only thing im worried about is him jumping out and running all over the place x_x when he gets out, HE GETS OUT. he runs away from me, is always slipping away from me. thats why i put him in the bathroom for play time. However the bathroom is really small and i wont be able to walk around with him in the pouch in the bathroom lol it would look like im pacing xD
