Hi can anyone tell me if they experience benefits with giving chins hawthorne leaves?

I have a 5-6 year old, 968 gram chin that now has a heart murmur grade 4-5. I did a little searching online and found a website saying hawthorne leaves might help in strengthening the heart muscle in chins but there is currently no scientific proof. I'm wondering if anyone on here uses is or has used it. Where is the best place to find it? And what amount is safe for a chin to have? Thanks!

I use Hawthorn Leaf & Flowers in my two supplements listed below.
I feed both to all my chins at ½ teaspoon twice a week. It is also ok to feed chins at ½ teaspoon of just Hawthorn Leaf & Flowers once or twice a week per chin.

No value.I would stay with good feed, water,&hay.Ask any of the "old time"ranchers and they will probably tell you the same thing.Keep it simple.

"Hawthorn is quite simply the best heart medicine available" Randy Kidd, D.V.M and there is scientific proof.
The interesting thing about hawthorn is how it normalizes heart activity. Depending on the need, it can stimulate or depress it.

There are many great veterinary books available that explain how hawthorn works. One thing though- it's gentle, so you need to offer it daily for 2 weeks just to start seeing the results. Hawthorn is very safe. Since 1900 hundreds of animal studies have been done and hawthorn showed extremely low toxicity (same level as rose hips) when even very high doses were given for an extended period of time.

Hawthorn also acts like PDE-3 inhibitor, just like Primacor, Inocor ( heart meds) . The result is boosted concentrations of cAMP ( increased calcium concentration inside heart cells). Several studies on rodents have proved that hawthorn works as PDE-3 inhibitor.
2003 American Journal of Medicine also shows that hawthorn is a potent heart medicine!

Hawthorn strengthen cardiovascular functions, abolishes rhythmic disturbances.

You can offer leaves, flowers and berries, but remember that it needs to be given for quite some time and please buy organic.
Your chin is 968g, so dosage is 200-300mg divided daily. If you do not have a mg scale you can get it new from amazon for about $4 or so, or I can tell you approximately how much 300 mg of hawthorn is.
Hope you find this helpful.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I've used it for about 11 years now for my chins, just it is added to a supplement I have given them all this time(not every day, but every other day).

It was suggested to me by my holistic pet care instructor for my class(who is also a holistic vet), years ago for chinchillas with heart murmurs. I only had one with a heart murmur, and I don't know if it helped him or not, but he did live to be 8 years old before passing on( I got him when he was two years old from a retired breeder.). He had a grade four heart murmur.

What wonderful information! Thank you :) This is extremely helpful. Can you tell me how much 300mg is?

I'll be taking her to the vet this Friday for blood work and discuss giving her hawthorn.

Yes. The vet mentioned her weight needs to go down since she gained about 100grams since last November... I do not own a wheel for her but will get one for playtime and encourage her to use it.

I would start with getting his weight down. A wheel if he doesn't have one, pull any treats, promote hay.

I would think the most reliable source would be to get capsules of hawthorn from the supplement section of the health food store. It will tell you on the bottle how much is contained in each capsule.

300mg is just over 1/3 of a gram. I just give my chins about 1/2 teaspoon one to two times a week.

Hawthorn is most commonly used to treat heart disease and to treat and prevent cardiovascular disorders. Herbalists consider hawthorn to be the world's best heart tonic. It increases blood flow to the heart by dilating the coronary arteries; lowers blood pressure and eases the heart's workload by dilating arteries in the arms and legs; and increases the force of the heart's contractions.

In Europe, hawthorn leaf has been scientifically proven to expand the blood vessels and let more oxygen-rich blood reach the heart muscles; increase the strength of the heartbeat and slightly increase its speed; and help the heart by reducing resistance throughout the rest of the circulatory system. Hawthorn leaf is used for angina and weak heart.

Hawthorn is also a powerful antioxidant. There is strong evidence that antioxidants lower the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and deaths from heart diseases, but this has not been proven in studies. Antioxidants are believed to help the coronary arteries dilate and increase blood flow to the heart.
