The vet wants me to give my boy .3 mg of children's benadryl for his allergies. Is that ok to give him?

I honestly have no idea. That's a new one to me. Never heard of anyone giving their chin Benadryl or a vet telling them too.

Maybe someone with more experience with sick chins and what not could help you. I've only had to take a chin to the vet once since owning chins.

What did the vet think he is allergic to? My vet once told me to use benadryl for my chin when we thought he had a spider bite or some sort of acute allergic reaction. He did not make it sadly. So I guess it may be ok, but I would not use it unless you really need to.

I would also like to know why they think the chin has allergies. Chins live in dust and hay, they don't really get allergies. It sounds like some other issue to me.

Benedryl is okay for dogs and cats, I don't believe there is much study of it in chins as chins don't have allergies.

I'm not saying it's impossible, just improbable.

Well I have no idea...
The poor guy shows all he signs of allergies. Itchy skin most of the time, but also can get sneezy and his eyes have bugged him twice only when it got really bad. It does seem to get bad in certain bouts. Mostly he is just really itchy :(
He doesn't seem to have any skin problems, but I was wondering if I should get blood work on him. Sometimes he'll just itch and itch and itch for minutes. :| Should I mix something with his dust or use another type altogether? He's on blue cloud right now.

Oh also....I don't over bathe him lol
I know that dry skin is a symptom of that :p
I even tried cutting back once..didn't help.

I would get him tested for fungus, it sounds like he could have it.

How much do you give him a dust bath? I only give my chins their dust bath twice a week during the summer, and once during the winter.

Also, what kind of bedding do you use? Some chins are sensitive to certain types for some reason. I had one boy that would sneeze like crazy everytime I put in fresh bedding for hours..then I switched to fleece liners and the sneezing has stopped altogether.

I would also try a new bedding or a new food. Itching can be a sign of a food allergy as well, what are you feeding?

I would not put a chin on bendryl for the rest of their life until trying those other things.

I would also check for tooth problems which can cause problems with eyes and sinus cavities, that must be done with xrays to see the upper molar roots.

I give him a dust bath 3 times a week. I haven't changed his bedding or food ever. This started 2 years ago when I moved into a house with dogs. I also changed cities then as well. It gets really windy here. I also noticed his sneezing seems to correlate with mine during the year. When my allergies get bad not due to chin related stuff his sneezing and itching gets bad. And then my cat's allergies spike then too xD

Only in the US is benadryl sold as an allergy med. Every where else uses it as a sleep aid. I would not give it to my chins. You may want to change away from the kind of bedding you use. Even if you never change the kind of litter its make up changes to when it was harvested. Which could also be why your allergies act up too. You may want to look into fleece liners just to keep the stability.

Alright, thanks guys. The bedding could be it. I use carefresh bedding and feed mazuri chinchilla diet
