Becoming a 501(c)(3)?

Could anyone help me understand the process and/or benefits of becoming a 501(c)(3)? Do I have to be 18? Thanks in advance!

From what I understand it's a lengthy process and it's pretty hard to be granted 501(3)(c) status. It's a lot of work..you can't just say "I want to be a 501(3)(c)!" and be done with it.
