I've never had an issue with galvanized pans. They can have some zinc in them, but generally the chins don't lick the pans and a quick scrub down will removed any particles that could cause a problem. I've known ranchers that have used galvanized pans for decades without issues.

It has been a while since I have been in manufacturing, but Bass will have a copy of MSDS (material safety data sheet) for the sealant. I would ask for a copy of that, it will tell you everything you want to know and more.

That's good to know, Susan. I just have heard so many evil things about zinc, I was concerned about them! I haven't even assembled the 141/142 FN yet - the 143 just arrived today. It will be the "neutral"/new cage for my trio when I intro them in two weeks. With all the fleece, pans, new hidey houses and such, I think I'm pushing $600. Yikes! Merry Christmas to me! And Mastercard!

You can leave the new pans outside in the sun for a day or so and then scrub them. That helps tremendously in keeping the loose zinc down on the pans. I take my rolls of wire that I use for cages and let them weather a bit out under my porch to help with it. It does help a lot if you are able to buy the galvanized steel that is manufactured in the US (or Canada or even Europe.) The steel used for pans or cage wire produced here is much safer than those manufactured in China, where you just never know about the coatings on things.

Exposure to zinc may be harmful under certain conditions, I guess, but I don't know. My chins don't chew the pans or galv wire. Please state the references for me so I can learn about it more. If you are so concerned, why did you buy them? To infer that my opinion of the sealant has no merit because I do not address another point is a bit strange, but I can see how you connect the two. I would suggest buying stainless steel pans to ease your concerns.

The point here is that 1) the sealant is not at all necessary 2) the sealant is toxic and/or not good to swallow and 3) the company is not to be trusted.

The 3rd point is enough to make me hunt a new supplier.

Name's not nola.
