My chinchilla Tinker just had her first baby----situation is a first for me too.I am wondering how long I should wait to clean her cage, what to do with the baby while I clean the cage, and can I handle the baby right away?

We clean a few hours after labor. The moms usually let us take the babies, but the first time usually requires a little bit of strategy. I put the chins in a carrier while I clean their cage. We (carefully) handle the babies right away, but don't keep them away from mom too long.

Clean it when you usually would. If you just cleaned it, then let it be. I don't go crazy disturbing moms unless the cage is a huge mess with blood everywhere from multiple births. I prefer to leave them with the familiar smells of their bedding and so on.

You can handle the kit right away, but I generally only do it to check weight and sex on the first day and the weights thereafter if necessary.

As it turns out, there are two babies!! Thanks for the advice-----will try to get Tinker and babies into a carrier in the morning like I usually would to clean the cage:)
