my female chinchilla appears to have been chewed slightly by her baby... it doesn't look too bad just a little scruffy... why would she be dong this? they have a huge cage and different ledges, but as the baby is now 7 weeks old she can get every where her mum can. it is mainly on her back end and i have seen her chewing on her mums tail.

I've seen that happen before, especially if mom has quit producing milk. I would separate them now if she's of a decent weight (for me, 300 gm is decent, for others 200 gm), and let her wean off of mom completely. After she is completely weaned, you can try reintroducing her to mom and the chewing "should" stop.

cool thank you.. will they be ok in cages next to each other or does it distress them that they can't get to each other?

They'll be fine. The little one may whine a bit at first, but I think you'll find mom will welcome the break. Give it a few weeks, let the weaning settle in, then you can put them back together and see if the chewing stops.
