Hi all- I am due to purchase my first ever chin. She is a mosaic. I am paying the breeder $250.00. For free the breeder is bringing her from another state, closer to my home. She also is willing to sell me an ebony female for 250.00. At this time that is a good chunk of change....(recently purchase fn, and saucer wheel).. I am just wondering what the average price of chins of this color are? Am I getting a good deal or should I wait to purchase a second chin later? The breeder has been extremely helpful and has answered all and more of my questions. So I feel very comfortable purchasing from her.

It really depends on the quality of the chin. If she is superb quality I may pay $250. Generally speaking mosaics will cost you around $150. Ebonies can range depending on darkness. They tend to start at $125 and go up. Again quality being key.

Can you post a picture of them?

It also depends on where you live. It seems like prices in Florida are super high, for example.

I sell mosaics for $125-$175, depending. I've sold hundreds of chins and the only ones I've sold for $250 are ones from my show string, or ones from my show lines. I've never sold a mosaic for that much.

I've seen some breeders charge $250 + for a mosaic simply because it is splotchy or just because that's how much chinchillas tend to go for in that area... there are some states where the chins sell for much more than here in CA!

Personally, I would only pay that much for a mosaic if it were excellent quality. In general, most mosaics I see at the chinchilla shows around here are around $125 - $175. A homozygous (solid black) ebony may go for around $200 - $250 around here while medium ebs tend to sell for less.

It all depends on what you're willing to pay and how much you want that particular chinchilla.

I agree with you Becky. It does seem certain areas sell their animals for alot more. Myself, I can't justify selling a mosaic for $250.

I just bought a super super nice white for $125 I believe. I can't wait to see what he does on the show table.

Depends on where you live and what you are getting. I have picked up phenominal eb females for 200. I sell mine for 175ish and the Mosaics for 150.00 But I have great ebony breeders out here.

ditto what has been said - If the mosaic was from good qualtiy stock, the chins is well worth it - If not, even from my area, Tri-state NY area that is high. A extra dark ebony would go for around $250-300 around here unless again the chin was really good 'show stock'

I've seen pet stores selling that high. Not breeders though, unless it's a super nice quality animal. As said above, an average white goes for around $150. Dark or extra dark ebs, about $200. Lighter ebs for $100-$150.

At pet stores around here, standards are $200 and "fancy" (i.e. anything but standard) is $260 plus.

Even though the breeder says that she is bringing the chin to you for free from out of state, do you think that her prices are already adjusted for her travelling expenses?

NY and FL seem higher than other places, but I say good quality chins will always sell for more, and have a place to go. It really does vary by state, breeder, and country for that matter. Here in FL we pay over $500 a month on AC so that ads to our costs, and we also can't find a good chin without driving 10+ hours or shipping one in, so prices are adjusted accordingly. I think just quantity also varies, some places just have more demand.

I live in Pa, the breeder is visiting family here. She is in TN. I would post photos of the two chins but she does not permit anyone to use her photos. As I said before, I am new to chins and was just wondering average prices. I can purchase a violet from a pet store here in town but wanted to stay away from pet stores in general. I live about 80 miles from Pittsburgh and I can't seem to find any breeders near me. I felt fortunate to find this breeder as her family only lives about 40 miles from me. You can see her cut chins at http://www.razchinchillas.com They all seem to be very well cared for and look healthy. I just wanted to be sure that I didn't get taken like most green horns do. Thanks

I've paid up to $450 for some of my chinchillas including standards as well as other mutation colors.

lilchinchilla thanks so much for the website. She lists several breeders driving distance from me. I just love this site!!

Pretty much it comes down to a chinchilla is worth as much as you are willing to pay for it. I have paid 500.00 for one but I have also gotten phenominal chinchillas for as little as 65.00 I have been equally happy with both.

I just put on hold 1 Mosaic Male and 1 Dark Ebony Male and my total for BOTH together was~ 260.00
I received a discount when I bought 2 at once.
And I personally think mine are super cute :dance3:

My hetero ebony male was £40 ($65) and my mosaic male was £70 ($115). I don't know if they are "good quality" or not but they're both healthy and from good breeders, and they're excellent pets which is all that matters to me.

So in my opinion $250 is expensive but it may be because of the area you live, quality of the chin, etc. The prices seem to vary a lot. If you are wanting to show then you'll probably need to spend a bit more on one that is of "show quality" but if you just want a pet I would say to shop around a bit because there are probably cheaper ones.

Prices here in FL are high and I am always amazed when I hear that they sell. I didn't purchase any of my breeding herd here in FL and the highest I paid was $300 for a extra dark standard who was a GSC.

Our mosaics sell for $150, and our hetero ebonies are $100, **** ebonies are $175. I have paid higher prices for some of our breeders, but the have always been either show quality animals, or from some of the top breeders here in Cali.
