If anyone is in the Phoenix area, this weekend the Arizona Humane society is waiving their adoption fees for all animals. There is a chinchilla girl there I am planning on rescuing, but I cannot keep her as I have 4 males. I just don't want someone with no knowledge to get her thinking she is a cool pet to have for free.

I will keep this updated as things may change by then, but if I do get her, is there someone in the area willing to take her? The adoption event starts on Saturday and I hope to be there early AM when it opens so I can grab her.

I can meet someone halfway in the surrounding areas as well if it comes to that or maybe we could set up a RR if I do end up getting her if someone else wants her. Her name is Brittany by the way, just thought it was ironic. I'm not sure about her color or age, but they are saying she is a female.

Let me know if you are interested, thanks!

ETA: Just saw, she is either a standard or a BV (They just say silver and black)

I'll take her and look for a home, if you need me to...I have some extra room for more rescues, as always. :) You can give them my name and number if they need my help in the future with chins or helping out new owners that adopt chins with their questions. They have a new adoption center in Tucson where they sometimes adopt out chins and I have been wanting to get care packages together for them to give out with chins. The main office in Tucson normally calls me with chins that come in, but they are getting better at having facilities to keep chins cool enough...and that's a huge plus because sometimes I get stretched so thin with rescues!

I'm going to swing by tomorrow and have a look at her. If she’s in bad shape, I'll just adopt her then and there depending on how much they want her fee to be. But yes, if you can take her that would be great! I will check her sex. If she is a he, I will keep it, but if she is truly a she, then I can't keep her. I was thinking of maybe getting a hold of Dawn, but I don't know if she’s still down the road from me or if she even has room. I got a new number but I still have yours. I will give you a call if I end up getting her tomorrow or Saturday! I am really worried though because she is at the main shelter in Metro Phoenix and in with the cats and it's so darn hot in there!

She's still there. She'll take in any chin that needs to be taken in...as long as it isn't for too long or she will get attached! :D

Let me know what the adoption fee ends up being if you have to pay one and I will send the money ASAP...email or call if you need my help.

I hope the little "girl" is alright. Poor little thing...but she'll be alright, they probably have her in the room that is air conditioned enough- if it's the room I am thinking of...maybe where they keep the little kittens with their mamas?

They are confusing me on the fees though. I dont know what they would classify her under.

Rabbits-$50***
Ferrets- $50
Guinea Pigs-$20
Rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, etc.-$10

***Cost includes surgical sterilization, 20% discount on rabbit-related items in our pet supply stores and a follow-up exam.

I know that down here they adopt them out for about $20 to $40 each...I have always told them to ask for more because people will treat them as throwaway pets if they ask for too little. (or, if they want, I will take them and make sure that the people know what to do myself!) Still, I wouldn't care what they charge - I'll pay it! I send them donations quite a bit anyway. ;) I'm glad that they are charging that much for the bunnies and guinea pigs...probably should charge more.

I was able to get her. She looks ok, just needs a good grooming and a bath. Her name is Brittany, but I just find that weird so I changed it to Gidgette. She's a BV, don't know her age, but I think she looks a little young still. Here are some pictures.

I wish I could keep her, but I don't need my boys arguing more than they already do. She's a sweetie though, and definitely a girl.

Awwwww...she is so purdy. :)

Glad you guys were able to help her out. And her name is perfect!

If we can get her up to the Seattle area she will have a home with me & the girls.
Anyone from that way coming up for the show next month???

I just have a few questions as I have never had a female chin before, just boys.

1) I've already been sprayed a few times, it's gross. Why do females do it and not males?

2) She is a squealer. If I go in the room, she squeals like someone is hurting her. The way the people grabbed her at the humane society, I'm hoping she isn't hurt.

3) She definitely has bumblefoot or something along those lines. What can I put on it to help her out?

4) Yesterday when I checked her sex, she had what looks like white crusty discharge around her vulva. She is closed up, but I just don't know what the discharge means.

5) She smells very musky. Almost like a urine and dirty armpit smell. Is this normal for females? I have never smelt this with my males before.

And most importantly 6) I have all boys, 4 to be exact. Gidgette is at the other side of the house and will be here another week. I wash my hands after I touch her or my boys like I would do with any new chin. Question is, can my boys tell that there is a female in the house even though she is on the other side of the house? I don't want them fighting or getting false hopes of some afternoon delight.... lol

Thanks!

1. She's just scared and upset...female chins seem to spray more than males. Most of the time when the males spray it goes straight down and doesn't hit the target - females have very good aim. :(

2. She's scared...that's why she's so vocal. Someone certainly could have hurt her and this may have made her scared of people. In a new environment chins need to just be allowed to relax...I'm guessing that people were a bit too grabby with her...poor little fuzzy.

3. For bumblefoot I would probably do some epsom salt compresses and clean them up. It may not be an infection and just be that the paw pad is malformed from being in a dirty cage or, more specifically, dirty, wet shavings for long periods of time. I'll take a look and see what I can do. Does it look like she has any sores or puss on her feet? I'll probably have to take her to the vet to get her straightened out if she is having foot issues.

4. Sometimes the discharge around the vaginal opening will dry up and get a little crusty after a chin has been in heat. Some girls are a little more messy after their heat cycles than others. I just worry about her because if she has a little infection going the stress of being at the Humane Society and such could really compromise her immune system. It's a good thing she is with you!!

5. It sounds like she is releasing her scent gland for you because she's very annoyed. That can produce that musky, armpit-like odor. Then again, it could just be her...she may just be really stinky and smelly from her previous home.

6. Wash your hands if you touch her and keep her away from the boys...you'll be fine. They don't have that great of a sense of smell and they probably won't notice at all that there is anything different. Your boys will be alright...just don't let them near her. :p

(I'm still waiting to hear back from Dawn...let me know if the girl has to go sooner. I'll figure something out!)

Gidgette is doing great! She was so angry on Saturday but yesterday and today she's been really good. She had small droppings on Saturday, but she's totally normal now. She's been eating hay very well...and she was allowed to keep a dustbath in with her for an entire day. That's really helped. Whoever had her before Brittney picked her up didn't take very good care of her. She's a little thin and her fur is just a mess. Poor little girl...but she's doing pretty well now. Dawn G, up in Phoenix, gave her some apple twigs and she is still enjoying them...almost like she's trying to save some for later, she'll nibble one a big and then put it down...very weird!

I'm glad that she's here. I can get her to calm down and chill out for awhile...she needs that because this was one angry chinchilla. She just needs quiet and for someone to be very gentle with her for awhile. I have a home in mind for her already with a lady in Phoenix. The lady lost one of her chins to a serious mouth infection back a few months ago and she has a lonely girl needing a friend. (I MAY SURPRISE HER WITH GIDGETTE! hehehehehe) Gidgette would have a great home with her...so, we will see after I have her here for a month and can make sure that she's completely healthy and ready for that. :)

This worked out so well...Thank you, Brittney...you're just awesome! But, you already knew that. :p
