Hey guys, so I took my Chinchilla to a Vet this morning, because the past 3 days he was sleeping a lot more and doesn’t eat a lot
The Vet checked everything and he also said that the lungs and heart are okay.
There is a mucus build up on his throat and he gave me a antibiotic.

Did any of you guys here got this issue ? What’s the time frame for our lovely chin to recover ?
I’m really sad at the moment…

What antibiotic did your vet give you? Is your chin eating at all? Do you have anything to handfeed?

Mucous build up in his throat...? Is he having problems breathing? Did the vet diagnose him with a URI (upper respiratory infection?)

Ill give u the name later i left it at home. He's eatint but not a lot. Yes having a little bit of problems breathing he didnt diagnose him with that but told me call him 2 days how my chin is doing

Anyway regarding the handfeed i give half almond piece. Anything u recommend?

Here is the name on the bottle "Trimethoprim Sulfate"

Haven't seen anything out of his mouth.. Really sad to see when I went home he was just sleeping and won't respond like before.. I gave him an almond and he stared at it for a while before eating it :(

Cut out the almonds. No nuts for chins, they are too fatty!

To hand feed you would want oxbows critical care. You can usually get it from your vet.

Many people use life line from Chocolate Chinchillas to add to hand feed or use on its own 4 hours after antibiotics are given due to the probiotics it contains, probiotics will help with a chins digestion especially when antibiotics are given and kill the guts natural good bacteria.
You can also just give probiotics you get from the drug store or health food store. Just remember to space it out from the antibiotics or it will simply kill the probiotics off.

If the chin is not eating, it needs to be syringe fed. The digestive tract of the chinchilla will become static and die if the chin does not get food, its not just a matter of the chin going hungry, it can die in a short amount of time. As far as the antibiotic, its not strong enough for a respiratory infection, the chin needs something like baytril.

Agree with Sooki and Dawn, you need to get Critical Care and start syringe feeding ASAP to help your chinchilla...

Unfortunately my beloved Chinchilla died early this morning.... I wish I knew this forum when I first got him...
