so yesterday i got a phone call from a pet store saying that they had a baby female beige chinchilla in . that she was 9-10 weeks old.. so i told my boyfriend about her because i have most of the breeding chins and he has most of the pet chins.. so today we decided to go look at her and most likely take her home. as soon as i walked up i noticed she was NOT a beige but a tan lol..she has very light freckles on her ears to that are starting to come in..i told the lady that she wasnt a beige and she proceeded to tell me thats what the breeder told her and that other people also came in and said that....i know without a doubt she is tan lol......NO IFS ANS OR BUTS!! the breeder seems to me that she is a backyard breeder. the girl at the pet store said the breeder didnt even know her birthdate because she had to many.......WHATS THAT TELL YOU!!
but ill try to get pics..and no she will NOT be used for breeding . she is pet only thats why she is at my boyfriends house. we named her rainy because we drove threw some HORRIBLE weather to get her lol

Is she in the new Ferret Nation? She's so little, she will probably be able to fit through the bar spacing of those cages.

Make sure you do a 30 day quarantine with her in a cage by herself in a separate room away from any other chins. And make sure to wash your hands after handling her or handling your other chins.

Chinchillalover - Don't self-police. There are clear rules regarding that. If you think someone made a negative comment, then use the report (!) button.

In this case, there wasn't a negative comment, but a query asking you to clarify.

no, why would they give me a chinchilla.

Because they contacted you...the only time petstores call me is when they have a chin dropped off and want me to take it in. I've just never had a petstore call me in to buy their stock, which I wouldn't do anyway because I don't want to support petstores selling chins. If they sell one chin, they'll just go back to that bad breeder/broker/wholesaler and get another one to fill the empty cage and make more money.

I was just curious.

You know, I'm probably going to get jumped on for this but I'm going to say it anyway as a general comment.

People who spend time giving advice, support & help on this forum really care about chinchillas and their welfare - it is what drives us to keep going when people don't listen or flip out when they don't like what they are being told as good, experienced advice - what bothers us is seeing a new(ish) member come to the forum and suddenly increase the number of chins - and keep increasing, despite saying they have no more room, can't afford any more, no room to quarantine etc etc.
The main reason we get concerned is that chins are not easy - they are not like other pets. When they become ill it is often very quick and very costly - vets (in the main) know very little about chinchillas and new owners sometimes do not have a proper chinchilla-competent vet.

When everything is going well chins seem very easy - when it all goes horribly wrong it is awful. Just ask anyone with a number of chins who have had disease go through their herd, chins needing vet treatment costing $100s or £100s, multiple chins with malocclusion needing syringe feeding, daily medication or spoiled food causing havoc in the herd ..................................

For the OP - this is what is behind people asking you lots of questions - it's all about the welfare of the chins because you have taken on a significant number in a short space of time. You seem offended by people asking questions and pointing things out but the reality is that members come to this forum because people here care about chins - that's what is being expressed here. Nothing more: nothing less.

Just so you know, every chinchilla you buy from that pet store, they are going to replace with another one. So if you think you are "saving" them in a sense, you are only helping the pet store profit and bring in more chins to sell.

If you just want pets, why not buy from breeders or adopt from rescues? There are hundreds if not thousands of chins that need homes that have been stuck in a rescue forever. If you buy from a breeder, you are actually supporting the creation of quality, healthy chinchillas rather that supporting a pet store that has chins with who-knows-what quality and history. I would think that since you yourself want to be a breeder, you would want to help support others.

I might understand if the store had called you because it needed to find a home and gave it to you for free...but I agree with Sumiko, I have never head of a pet store calling someone just because they want you to come buy something. Unless you have told them you want to come in a buy one when they get one.

I am a bit perplexed at you having stating a few weeks ago you were at your max, yet you now have 20 chins..that is A LOT of chins. It is hard enough keeping up with my 7. I know if I had that many I would not be going out and buying more..I would be saving that money for a vet fund, food, or any other necessities...

Ok, so I have been debating on whether or not to say anything about this. But I started out defending the OP when it seemed like she was being attacked a few weeks ago. But I now have started reading over and over questions about how to care for them, taking more in, not having enough money for cages, etc. So, I have a couple of questions for you to ponder...

If you are trying to be a breeder, shouldn't you have the knowledge on how to properly care for them? Shouldn't you already have cages for the chins? I do not think that breeding is a good idea until you know WAY more... like Tunes or AZchins or Jags... They are very reputable breeders/ranchers. And if you can't listen to their advice then, I am sorry, why are you breeding?

I agree,

If you are getting to the limit there is no turning back.
I now have 2, and I wouldn't mind getting another one but I simply can't because of the possibility (spelled wrong I know) they can get sick all together and I don't have that much money.

If something would happen to a number of your chins you could end up broke, and maybe getting "rid" of some of your chins. I believe you don't want that happening. (I certainly wouldn't :( )

i do have all my chins in very nice cages, i will not use breeding cages i think they are very cruel i like my chins to have lots of room .... i will not be making my chins breeding machines i want to make that clear...i will only have a litter here and there im not doing it to make money im doing it because i enjoy the babies and the ones i am breeding are breeding quality let me state that now .and i didnt have the money for my ferret nations but i didnt get them. i have $1500 in my savings account devoted to my chins for STRICTLT vet bills and emergencies...my other money i make is for there food , hay, toys etc.. like i said I AM AT MY MAX I HAVE MORE THAN MY BOYFRIEND my boyfriend only has 9 now ..... I DID NOT get another chinchilla he did. that is what you all are not understanding..

this pet store always has chinchillas since i have been going there 4 years ago. they called me because about a year ago i told them if they ever got any baby colored chins to inform me and she happened to call me and my boyfriend wanted her. i had no interest in getting her because i do not want anymore i have enough chins and i still have room but if i had planned on breeding i cant keep anymore. he has decided not to breed that is why he has most of the pet quality chins.. so its not a problem that he got another chin is what i am tryin to make you all understand.. if i had purchased another one then i would understand what you all are saying..but this has nothing to do with me , this is his chin at his house. not mine.. i will not be buying anymore chinchillas for myself nor do i care to because in all actuallity i know that i would get in over my head. it is not hard for me to keep up with mine , i enjoy taking care of my chins and i love them all dearly and that will never change. some of you think that i am not taking proper care of my chins but i am. this is why i get offended because half of you clame you are giving me advice but some of you are only butchering me to death and i honestly just cant take it anymore. i try to explain myself every time and every time yall just keep coming back at me.....i love this website i have learned alot off of it i would like to keep it that way. so please to the people that just cant seem to stop questioning me about the same things over and over just please leave me be..im willing to accept advice, kind advice, not critisizing. to the others that are being kind to me and giving me advice and not questioning me to death thank you..its all i ask for is for you all to give me kind advice i understand you all are doing this for the chins best interest but i love all of them and i ask that you all please stop taking things so harsh on me, im more than willing to listen if you all can do it without saying you said this you said that if you can just give me your advice ill listen...thats all i ask..

and since everyone is not understand this i will state this now clearly for everyone to see....

i only have 11 chinchillas......that is all

me and my boyfriend DO NOT live together and he has 9... i say that we have 20 because i love all of his just like they are mine and most of them i bought for him so i just want you all to consider i myself do not have 20 chins i only have 11...

Oh, so you did buy baby-safe cages now. That's good. I was afraid when you couldn't afford the Ferret Nations for your pet chins a couple weeks ago, you wouldn't be getting your breeding chins appropriate cages either. In all the pictures you posted, your chins were being housed in Super Pet cages which like the Ferret Nations, have wire spacing too big for kits, but I'm glad you found money to get appropriate cages for them now...

Are you keeping all the litters you will be producing here and there?

no the super pet cages were the first 2 cages we ever bought lol..we learned really fast that the babies could get out and i had to baby proof my enitre cage with chicken wire lol...after that i never made that mistake again lol..

and no i do not plan on keeping all of the litters, i plan on selling them but only to people with knowledge of chinchillas.my babies will NOT be on c list or in the local newspaper..i will have them for sale on this site though because i trust that they will go to good homes on here.. like i said i want to breed because i enjoy it. my mother has been breeding akc show quality boxers for years now so i do know that breeding has its ups and downs. i understand that completely.

What if you are unable to find homes for the kits? The economy is bad right now and a lot of people can't afford to buy animals right now or keep them at the apartments and rentals they are having to move into. You do realize that nearly every chinchilla rescue is full and overflowing with pet chinchillas right now... and it may not be a good idea to breed if you are only adding to the pet population. With multiple mutation x multiple mutation pairings, you are not going to be breeding any show quality chinchillas.

Ok let me pick up on some of these points since you have raised them.

1. You're doing it because you enjoy the babies and your chins are pedigree quality - well, it's great that you have seem to have purchased quality chinchillas but that does not change the fact that breeding chins is not all fluffy and nice. Sometimes it goes horribly wrong. Members are expressing concern that you seem to have jumped in with both feet, intending to breed, without some of the basics of chinchilla care under your belt first.
Do you have a good mentor?
Do you have a chinchilla competent vet?
Do you have time to take care of babies 24/7 if things go wrong?

2. You have money saved up - again, that's great but you're missing the point I am afraid. Members here are expressing legitimate concern that you have taken on a number of chins in a short period of time. You have little or no experience of chins and have gone from 0-20.
If a chin gets sick or number of chins get sick how will you look after them 24/7?
Believe me - ask anyone who has more than 2 or 3 chins who need "nursing" attention. They will tell you that looking after sick chins round the clock; syringe feeding, medicating, observing, feeding kits 1-2 hourly is draining emotionally, physically, and financially. If the chin(s) tragically dies at the end of it you just want to give up and sleep for a month - but you can't because all of the others need your attention too.
It's not just about having money saved.

3. The new chin is your boyfriend's & we're not understanding that - I think you'll find we're understanding all too well. Between the two of you there are 20 chins - that's a lot of chins for newbies to have all at once in a short period of time.
Just because the chins are not at your house does not mean you will not end up looking after the chins if they got sick does it? Or are you going to tell us that if chins were sick or you had kits between both houses you'd look after them individually? Or would you run between houses, potentially spreading disease (if there was any) between the 2 herds?

There's so much here that needs to be carefully thought through.
