When a forum error message popped up, I went to yahoo. This is what I found:

Instead of vacuuming, she picked up crumbs. Instead of scrubbing the toilets, she flushed. Is it MY fault that they don't pay room cleaners more than minimum wage? God knows the poor people deserve it, but they get paid to do a good job and when I stay at a hotel, I expect a clean room. If I cleaned rooms for a living, I WOULD NOT cut corners just because someone was stingy and didn't leave a tip. I worked every single summer either at my step grandpa's nursury helping to move truck loads of hay, or at my real grandpa's garden since I was probably 9 until me and my grandpa had a falling out. That crap really does build character. But when it's something where some one's health and the sanitation of their environment comes into play, that's not something to be messed with.
Anyone agree or disagree?

I don't disagree, but I am soooo not surprised!! I have stayed in plenty of hotels and have learned to bring my own cleaning supplies, like clorox wipes. I have even asked for a clean set of sheets to be brought to my room, b/c I have found hair in them-- even at Disney Resorts, where we are members. I hate that I have to wash toilets, sinks, and showers down before my family can use them but I would hate even more for my toddler to put her hand in someone's urine....gross!! I really hate staying in hotels but my husband loves going on vacation.

Yeah, I'm not really surprised. I've watched those shows where they analyze hotel rooms and it's pretty gross.

You see, I'd love to be able to go to a hotel and not have to worry "Did they scrub the toilet? Did they wash the shower properly? Are these really new sheets? Is that my hair or someone elses..." But people are just so darn dishonest these days! We have a motel up here that's FAMOUS for being so NASTY. I was forced to stay there one night because we got fogged in and I saw two, not one, but two cockroaches crawl up the walls. You better believe as soon as the fog lifted, we were gone and I took a scorching hot shower.

Don't ever use the non-disposable glasses/coffee cups. They have caught maids on spy TV just wiping them with used towels, and I have actually seen this too.

Well, while I was reading this, I kinda had a different look on things. I didn't really care about the fact that she skipped cleaning (of course this isn't right, but this isn't my point), but the fact that she acted like ANY mess was the customer's job to clean up and she was just there for free money.

People take vacations and stay in motels to relax, not to have to think about cleaning up everything. Thats why there are maids. Yes, it's courteous to clean up the room before you leave, but do they have carry vacuum cleaners and brooms in their luggage? How bought a brillo pad?

Minimum wage? Better than nothing. Try working at a Burger King getting paid $6 an hour when you have to rush to get every car out in 90 seconds and you're pouring sweat because you're literally running through the restaurant to please your manager, forget tips. A job is a job, in this economy, be pleased with minimum wage. The $100 tip - I find that bogus, unless she intentionally took the money out of someone's wallet laying on the dresser.

Diapers in the trash? Well where else should they be? The maid obviously shouldn't consider having kids and realizing how much of a mess they make. Demoralizing? It's your job honey, grow up and quit whining. I've never heard of someone saying it takes 20 minutes to change sheets either. Maybe 5 minutes, but does she work like a snail?

Amen. I was working in extreme heat (90+ degrees) at my last job hauling around FIFTY POUND BOXES back and forth from a conveyer belt, but never once did I complain. Sitting here now I almost cry because I miss my job so much. I'd kill for a job cleaning, I'd kill for a job in general. Okay, now I'm getting bitter. Ugh, I just hate the fact I'm so desperate for a job, I'd bend over backwards, take out my piercings, do almost anything for a job and yet screw ups like her get one. If that hotel hired me, heck, they'd never have a problem, ever.

If you don't want to clean up after people, don't take a job cleaning. Simple as that.

And while it's disgusting, I agree with what others have said, it's not surprising. If you want to go on vacation and not have to stay at hotels/motels, look into an RV.

I'm not surprised.
I just assume that it's like using a public toilet. No big deal really. I take some shower shoes with me. The sheets are the only worry though.

I'm with everyone else. The only thing that really bothers me are the sheets and the remote. They do not clean that remote. I clorox the sucker! I watched the program with the non-disposable cups and thanked god I've always taken my own disposable ones! (I know they provide them, covered in plastic, but I know 100%, with out a doubt that mine are clean!)

I never really thought of how utterly disgusting hotel rooms can be until I read this. When I went to Germany with my mom she brought her own bed sheets to change out...that probably would have been a good idea for me too but I never thought of it.
I think one night at our 2nd hotel (in Munich) my feet got bitten up by those darn bed bugs (I think thats what they are called) I woke up to find quite a few little redish looking bumps covering my feet. I was horrified. I made sure when I got home to vacuum out my suitcases and warsh everything I wore in hot water. Thankfully none came back with me, but that goes to show me I should have been more careful and brought my own sheets. The maids probably didn't do their jobs of changing sheets =/

I guess I never really thought about this. I mean, I can see not cleaning rooms for free or something, but if you're getting paid to scrub the toilets, then scrub the toilets. No one forced her to work as a cleaning lady. That's as bad as the workers here at the UPS loading plant complaining all they do is lift heavy boxes and load semi's all day. Well what did you THINK you were going to do when applying for a loader/unloader job?

It's disgusting. It's their job, and I think they should do it well. I work at Meijer, folding clothes and stocking. I'd get fired if I folded the clothes crappily... I know this would never happen, but there should be a way that these peopel are watched to make sure they actually do a good job cleaning... and get fired if they dont....

I've always wondered if I was the only one who papered hotel toilets (just like I would any public toilet).

Most of the places I've stayed have at least looked clean on the surface, but probably because I read every review I can find before I reserve a room. I don't care if it's noisy, I just want it to be clean. My mom and sister booked a room in a Florida hotel when they went for a family reunion. They checked in, got their key, took a look around the room and walked out (after complaining, fighting the person at the desk who was going to charge them for a night anyway, and getting thoroughly ticked off in general). Not only did the place look dirty, it smelled awful and there was an extremely moldy rag left tucked behind the mini fridge and the mold was spreading to the wall and carpet.

They ended up staying at a more expensive hotel a few blocks away (asked to see the room first just in case...it was very clean). They explained about their experience at the icky hotel and the manager gave them a good rate. Now that's a good businessman there. You can bet the next time mom went to FL she stayed at the second hotel, even though she probably could have stayed elsewhere for a little cheaper.

Oh I booked a room 2 months in advance at a cheap motel at Carolina Beach 2 years ago. Well, I got there an hour early for check-in, but figured I could go ahead and see the place and they could let me get everything straight beforehand. Well, I had been charged 2 months earlier for the room and they told me that the room was no longer available because the people who stayed in it before me had left the place a mess and that it would take a good 6 hours to clean. So I asked to see the room just to see how bad it was. Well, the room they threw me in was no beach front, and looked like a closet with 2 twin size beds squished together with no walking room inbetween them. There was mold, cigarette burns in the bedding, and stains on the walls. I was p-od. I finally got the manager to issue a refund (considering they couldnt accomodate me in the first place, and this was the trash I paid for?). I ended up walking down the street and paying $40 more per night at a nice cozy apartment complex, but boy was it a nice place. I decided to never book a room again until I see it.

I used to work in housekeeping, and every room we cleaned was inspected with a fine tooth comb! Of course the hotel charged an arm and a leg, but at least it was clean! Since then, I have been very very picky where I will stay, I read reviews, and I have been known to ask for a different room if the room they give me isnt clean enough! I refuse to use anything except the sheets in any hotel, I bring my own blankets, because they dont wash anything on the bed except the sheets (at a good hotel at least). But just when I thought I was picky, I stayed at a place with a friend in October who litterally sprays the ENTIRE room with disinfectant spray, and she brings her own little sweeper as well! I just think it is crazy that we pay ALOT of our hard earned money on a gross, bug ridden hotel room!

I've never stayed in a bad hotel really, but I don't stay in cheap hotels either, lol.

I guess my thought is, do you clean your toilet right after company leaves before you use it? Do you clean the toilet in a public bathroom before you use it? Do you clean the counters off in the mall bathroom before you wash your hands?

As long as they change the sheets, and there aren't turd stains in the toilet, or trash laying around... I'm pretty happy. But again, I usually stay in more expensive hotels, the benefits of having a travel agent in the family.
