Is alfalfa hay good for chinchilla?

You're going to get varied opinions on this. I don't think its bad and some ranchers feed alfalfa primarily. I personally feed Timothy year round and nursing mothers/chins needing to gain weight get some alfalfa in addition to Timothy.

The only reason I bought the alfalfa is they were all out of Timothy at pet store and didn't want to not get something

That should be fine. Alfalfa hay is alright to feed to chins. I prefer to give the chins timothy, but alfalfa is fine if not too much is given. Sometimes chins that are not used to eating straight timothy hay will have diarrhea or soft droppings, start out feeding it sparingly.

I have fed it along with timothy for years and years with no problems.

I get a bale of grass hay from a farmer and it has some alfalfa mixed in. Idgie will always go for the alfalfa first.
