For those of you following my thread on Sugar Ray, my new PW male that developed stasis and then head tilt. I finally have some good news. Our beautiful mosaic, Piper and her beau, Big Daddy are the proud parents of our first litter of the year!!! Two beautiful standard girls, weighing in at 60 and 62 gms. I have been waiting for Piper to have these babies since we came home with Sugar Ray - she was kind enough to wait till things settled down wih him a bit - she is so considerate! The family is doing well. I literally just checked on her 30 minutes before she gave birth so she littered without any issues - just like her previous two litters. She is an awesome mom! Here is a picture of the family - one of the girls is hiding under mom. Big daddy is my favorite chin.

Actually, normally he is in the cage sitting right in front of Piper protecting her and the babies. It is unusual for him to be in the run. He has been next to her day and night for the past two weeks. He is normally the sweetest most even tempered chin but since she has been close to term, he kacks at me every time I open her door. Little bugger!!!

Here is a better picture of the babies. This is my daughter Emma holding them after school today - she was surprised to find two more chins in her herd. Isn't it cute - they're kissing!

Very cute.

Question though...why is the hole open?

Laura - I know that every breeder has their own way. If my chins have not had a litter in the past year and if their litters are small (2 or less), I will allow a one time breedback - which is the case with these chins. Piper has had two litters but it has been a year since her last and Big Daddy is not an aggressive breeder. He is affective but he is a sweetheart with all of his females. There is a safe place for the babies to go for the 3 days that he will be allowed in Pipers cage after which time he will be shut out but will be allowed to run over her cage. I am sure that there will be many who disagree with this but also that there are many breeders who will agree with this. In any case, I do not allow pregancy after pregnacy after pregnancy in case that is what you were wondering.

I didn't think that at all, I just wondered. I don't use runs (perhaps in the future), so was just curious. I know of some folks who use runs, but not collars and others who have other methods also.

The runs work well for me. I do wish that I didn't have to use the collars (but they are necessary for everyone's safety) and do wish that the cages were a little bigger but until I am able to build my own these will have to do. Unlike most large ranchers, we still get all of our breeders out for playtime so this eases my guilt somewhat over the size of the cages. For those chins that we do have in larger cages we find that they seem to stay in one small area anyway.
