A safe hamster/mouse wheel?

I will getting some egyptian spiny mice in the next few weeks, and I really want to give them a wheel due to their active nature. The only problem is that I refuse to give them a plastic wheel and/or a wheel that is made of mesh. I do not like my animals ingesting plastic and spiny mice feet are too delicate for mesh.

My question is - how can I modify a mesh wheel to be safe OR how can I make a small, solid metal wheel of my own?
