I had to delete the message that Bell left after the last post, but she seems determined to know how long people have owned their chins. Apparently, this is a big deal for her and makes all the difference in this thread.

So, I'll start it off. I have owned chins for 9 years, and I own over 25 times what you do. Though I'm really not sure what that has to do with getting rid of your chins so you can focus on dogs instead. I haven't officially commented on your situation, but I will go ahead and get the ball rolling.

Everyone? Please post how long you have had chins. That's obviously a huge deciding factor in whether to get rid of them or not.

i have had chins for less than 4 years. and i am currently hand feeding my one baby and it honestly takes a lot of time out of my already busy life BUT i would never give him up. when he is wrapped up in that little towel and looks up at me with those sweet eyes, i know i am doing the right thing. even when i can hear my dog outside the door wanting to get in and get some love..........i am happy to have Richie in my life.
the second chin i have my fiancee got from craigs list and honestly i really didnt want him, just didnt think i could handle the commitment but i am just he type of person who once i have a pet, its mine. i would always wonder what happened to him and i couldnt handle not knowing if someone else was mistreating him.
yeah i go to bed after midnight every night, yeah i'm tired a lot and my nights are crazy but i just figure that is what coffee is for and i will sleep when im dead! ;)

I have 4 pet chins and have owned chins for about 2.5 years. Not an expert but in for the long haul. I also have 4 dogs and 4 cats, several birds and a handful of reptiles/amphibians and some fish.

Oh, good job Carol. Should I add the entire list? 2 horses, 4 dogs, 12 cats, 1 bun, 2 degu, 12 rats, 2 ferrets, 1 bearded dragon, 1 macaw, 1 cockatiel......I think that's it. Oops! Almost forgot Emo the guinea pig.

And I don't plan to get rid of any of them.

Oh, do three kids count as pets too? Nah, probably not. :)

We've owned chins for 6 years. Did have 4 but the two that were rescues and were old have since passed away. Now we have 2. That doesn't include 7 cats, 5 ferrets, 1 bun, and anywhere from 25-40 hedgehogs depending on current babies. Oh and two kids and one husband.

I have 5 chins and have owned chins for just about 4 years now.
I also own 1 dog and care for my sister's dog, so technically I have 2 dogs. We also have fish.

Sure, I haven't owned them for 9 years, but does that really change anything? I owned mine while in college, and for many students they would have dumped them when they were busy working, studying, and going to class. But I made it work. :))

Sadly Julie, Maddie passed Saturday night. I was unable to add my little hedgie girl to my list. :(

Oh! Oh! Can I play? I don't have chins (well, one, but it's on my face), but I have other animals. I've had hedgehogs since 2005, so about 4 years now. I currently have 3 hedgehogs, but a 4th will be moving in at the end of June. I've had dogs my entire life. The first one came home when I was just a baby, but he was rehomed to a lovely adults-only home (my cousins) when we figured out he was was very aggressive toward me. I remember sitting and watching TV, and then having this dog lunge at me, growling. He lived at my cousin's house for about 18 years. After Skippy, we added Buster who lived with us for 16 years until his death. Now we have Taz. We also have a cat, and have had fish pass through the house on occasion.

Nancy and Tunes - I like how you include husbands (if applicable) and children into this, hehe. Sorry to hear about little Maddie, :(

I have only had my chin for a year now. Always wanted one, finally got one. I would love to have more, but don't have the space since my gal doesn't want companionship. Would I trade her in for one that would accept a companion - never! She is with me for life.

Well, my siggy show what I have, but I will list again - I have a dog, 2 cats, 4 parakeets, a cockatiel, 2 gerbils, a fishtank full of cichlids, and about 20 stray cats year round - I don't have the heart to get rid of them either. All of my animals are included in my family. I wouldn't get rid of my 2 children, and I would never get rid of my animals. It's difficult on only one income, but you find a way to make it work. I make time for all of my animals, because they are so important to me. And if I wasn't going to make it work, I wouldn't have gotten them in the first place.

Peggy, I'm so sorry you lost your hedgie :(

I have 24 chins and three cats. I also have a 17 year old foster daughter, who I attribute my newly found grey hair to :) I have had chins for 6 years, and have been breeding for four.

For the record, while it's fun to hear what animals people have and for how long, I don't see how that has any bearing on the discussion of re-homing or not. I "re-home" kits, and occasionally adults, and it certainly isn't because I don't love them. But I also have some that I would never give up unless I absolutely had no other choice.

Tunes, I am sorry to hear about your hedgie! Losing pets is so hard.

Wasn't this thread about a Rescued dog and NOT about how chinchillas and hedgehogs aren't pets? Thought you had to stay on topic this is way off ya she may not want to keep her chins BUT its mainly how she rescued a dog why can't you keep it on that topic START a new topic some where maybe in the chin or hedgehog section about how they aren't pets or how long you've had them WHY in other pets and in a dog rescue forum?

Illini - In response to your warn, since you obviously cannot see the post that I referred to quite clearly in my post, I'll quote the part of it to you that even remotely made sense here:

HOW LONG HAVE ANY OF YOU OWNED CHINCHILLAS? I told you how long I have what about you?

Now do you understand why people are posting? Also, please don't self police the threads. When you become a member of staff, you can feel free to. At this point you're not, so don't.

Abby W - They are being posted because Bell screamed that she wanted to know. As far as adding the other animals in, I think they are addressing the fact that the OP doesn't have "time" to care for her chins so is getting rid of them so that she can focus on dogs. I have no problem with that - give them to someone who wants them rather than someone who feels they are an obligation, and go to a dog forum instead. <shrugs>

Peggy--You've got yourself quite a herd over there! Wow.........my son would LOVE to come visit your house! Sorry bout your hedgie. :(

I love seeing how we all have so many different types of pets! If i didnt mention I also have a dog.............and she truly is my best friend! I love that girl. In fact, here is her picture.....she's my pretty girl!!
I also included a pic of my golden..........he died a few years ago very suddenly at only 8 supposedly of a brain annyruesm (sp??). very sad

Michelle, that's so sad! I grew up with golden retrievers. They are the best dogs in the world! I would love to get another one, but my hubby doesn't like dogs, and I developed an allergy. I guess I can't complain too much, he is pretty tolerant of my chinchilla addiction.

Thanks. He was a great dog.......his name was Molson. Any my other dog Misty pictured above with him took well over a year to grieve his loss. She was so depressed. Now she is MY shadow and I love it!! I think she gets a little jealous of the time I spend with the chins, especially that I hand feed one 3x a day but I always give her extra love & even let her lay on my bed (until she jumps off 'cause she is hot!)

The OP has now decided she has allergies to chins, after 9 years of owning them, and that's supposedly where all this is coming from.

She has also asked to have her membership removed, and I have honored her request.

I've owned chins for 8 years, and I currently have 32. My first chin recently passed from malo(pet store chin) but I never toyed with the idea of finding her a different home.

I also have 3 dogs and 2 cats. One cat has been with me for 5 years the other cat and 3 dogs were added within the last year. I wouldn't think of getting rid of anything unless it was for a justified cause...allergies don't count on that list for me. I'm slowly developing an allergy to "dirty" dogs but that's what allergy pills are for...if it gets bad enough I'll take those and my problem will be solved. Once you take in an animal you are responsible for its well being. Getting rid of something after 9 years doesn't seem logical to me.
