I have a male chinchilla and he is quite the curious little fellow. I've had him for about 2 years now (he is about 2 1/2). I let him run around every night for an hour or more. He is usually running around minding his own while chewing anything he can get his little teeth on. Whenever he comes towards my feet he nips at my heel or toes for a bit...sometimes runs off and then sometimes it appear he is trying to...mate with my foot.

Does this pass? He is a really sweet social chinchilla but I don't enjoy him trying to get it on with my foot. What bothers me more is how I should react to the situation. I pull away my foot most of the time but that seems to excite him more at times.

He's been like this for about 6 months and I thought it would pass but nope.

Any info on this? or advice?

I understand all animals are like this but surely he must know my foot is not another chinchilla.

gizmo is a little over a year now and he still does this from time to time, only its my hand. When he does it I just gently push him away and he'll stop.

Most of the time they grow out of it, but sometimes some chins are just overly excitable and continue to do that for many, many years. My chinchilla, Jack, is getting older now and he still does it. However, with Jack, it used to be MUCH MUCH worse - bad to the point where I had to make sure that people couldn't see him when they came over to look at chins because he would "show off" for them in the most disgusting ways. Now I can show people his flip over trick and it's usually not something that they are grossed out by.

I'd give your little guy another year, at that time he really should calm down tremendously. There's something about being 3 to 4 years old that really mellows out most male chins...

I would get a chin safe cuddle buddy from someone on here (do a search) and place it by my foot. Hopefully he will chose to hump that instead.
Come to think of it, he should have one in his cage too.

Terrible things.... That dont come out in the wash! LOL
I love Jack, he is a one Chin Circus act.

Is that what cuddle buddies are for..... hahaha i thought they slept on it not with it.

MaveRick is the same way. He wants to "love" your hand and arm when you're refilling the food bowl, his hay, hanging new toys, and giving toss toys, etc. lol He even has a cuddle buddy. I give them 2 cuddles a week because they get so nasty.

Wow, I certainly have a lot to learn. I made my girl a cuddle buddy. I guess she won't be needing it.

My chinchilla, Toby, is going to be 3 in February and he has recently picked up the habiat of humping my teddy bear's leg in my room lol. He's been doing it for a couple weeks now.

Tubby, almost 3 years old by now, has a weird fetish for socks. He wouldn't hump bare feet, just feet with socks. Alternatively, he would hump socks by themselves. Now he has a fleece remnant in his cage that he constantly humps. Tubby is exactly like your chinchilla, chews everything & anything, that's why I avoid anything stuffed in his cage because I'm afraid he'd chew it & eat the stuffing.

Whereas Winnie, a little over 2 years old, used to hump my hands until I trained him awhile ago to not do so by gently pushing him away.

Good thing my chin doesn't do that. I think you guys just have some horny chins.

Do girl chins do this too? ( though in a different way, of course) I just gave Herby her first cuddle buddy and I would hate to come out one morning to find her getting..shall we say, amorous with it...;)

And now I am scared to get the male I want now..:))

My girls just mount each other  I think they're... friskier than my boys. I rarely see the boys having fun with each other, and they never want to with us...

Wow I'm new to chinchillas and just got my first two boys...and I am just about rolling on the floor here reading this thread! And I thought it was odd that my CAT humps everything, now to find out my chins might start doing it too!!
