    Could use some support!

Hi, was hoping for a little help. I have applied for a small business grant through Chase to expand our painting/remodeling business to help seniors and low income families. In order to be eligible, we need 250 votes (we only need 92 more). Could you please vote for Designing Painters at...

    Meal Time

When I rescued Idgie, she was eating Mazuri, so I have kept her on that.

New chin owner looking for basic advice

The cage looks pretty good size wise. I wouldn't change it right away. I didn't even change anything in Idgie's cage for awhile. She'll need time to adjust to you and all the noises in your house. I wouldn't get her a buddy anytime soon. It isn't required if you are going to bond with her...

    Treats for Chinchilla's

Raisins are really not good for chins. They actually don't need any treats, but I do like to give Idgie some. She likes old fashioned rolled oats, oat groats (oats before they are rolled) and rose hips. She even finds apple sticks to be a treat in a way.

    Carefresh Natural Pet Bedding

I use Carefresh or another brand. Idgie is used to it and doesn't eat it. Like the lack of odor since her cage is in our main living area. Don't like the price, though.

    What to feed toothless chinnie?

I don't know if it is nutritionally correct, but I used a coffee grinder to pulverize pellets, along with rolled oats. Don't know if that would help or not.

What do you use to keep your floor clean?

My chin lives in the living room/dining room. The whole house is hardwood--built in the 20's.

What do you use to keep your floor clean?

I'm lucky to have hardwood floors, so I just use a little dust broom.

    How many is too many?

I have only had one chinchilla at a time. I would consider getting two same sex siblings to share a cage, but never wanted to add another chin. You would have to expect to have separate cages at least in the beginning, and then there is no guarantee that they would be able to share a cage...

    A Hard Decision...

I think that I would keep her at my home and see how it goes. If not well at all, then you could always try to rehome her at that time. But maybe it will go well enough. Unless I knew of someone who definitely would care for her, I would not give her up. And whatever decision you make now...

    Cage bottom???

I actually bought a piece of the cover for a light in a drop ceiling (about $5 at Menards, Home Depot, Lowes). It is like a thin piece of plexiglass/vinyl. I was able to cut it (that is the hardest part--wear glasses!) to fit the bottom of the wire cage. It is light weight and really easy to...

    treats?

Pass on the raisins! Not good for your chins. I understand the desire to give a treat. I give Idgie rolled oats or oat groats (oats before they are rolled to look like oatmeal) and crushed rose hips. That's about it. She's happy for me to give her a few a day.

Where to get quality bulk hay?

I buy hay from a farmer not too far away. Not sure how feasible that is for you. If there are stables nearby, you could find out where they get their hay from. Horses eat the same kind of hay. And if you are feeding alfalfa based pellets (and most are), you should try and get mostly grass...

    Wood Problem

Poplar is a good alternative. Can you get that?
  15. Idgie

Would this wood be safe for Chins?

I just buy poplar instead of any kind of pine. Less knot holes and better looking for shelves. Plus, no confusion. And you can cut up small poplar trim for chew sticks.

The most confused I have ever been. Please help.

I don't give my chin raisins. I do like to give a little treat every day, but there are enough to choose from that are healthy. My chin loves oat groats, rosehips, and old fashioned rolled oats. I figure, why risk it and give her something that can be harmful when I can just give her...

    question about water and handling

I just buy purified water. 88 cents a gallon. Easy and cheap since chins don't drink much. That way I don't worry.

    Material to block an area?

I get big pieces of cardboard from Menards. Places with kitchen cabinets, furniture, and appliances are good. I use a combo of baby gates (though many chins can jump over them!) and cardboard for a play area. But I sit in there with Idgie and interact with her, so she can't escape.

    Rose hips question

I prefer the small pieces. It allows me to give Idgie treats that are tiny and she takes them very gently.

What are good treats to give your chin?

Idgie likes rosehips, rolled oats, and oat groats. That's about all that I give her. You're right that raisins are not good. Neither are seeds.
