    Temp vs. Humidity

Is it possible to just run them both or are you afraid that your neighbors won't empty the dehumidifier? (My dehumidifier just runs on low constantly, but mine is in the basement and I have central air.) The a/c should be helping to dry the air. And you have it plenty cold. I'd get the...

    safe wood for shelving

    I prefer poplar. Less knots

    Where to get wood?

You can use poplar boards. They have them at Home Depot.

    Treats

My chin likes rolled oats or oat groats with the green hull, rose hips, and apple blossoms which she gets a few of one of them a day. She also loves Apple twigs and gets one daily.

    Question on wire mesh floor

I covered the bottom of the cage with a plexiglass like product. It is the cover for those drop ceiling lights. It bends a bit to fit in the door and is lightweight, but is tricky to cut and not break. (Wear goggles!). Cheap and available at Menards, Home Depot, Lowes. I find that it is...

Are there any 'softer' pellets for chinchillas?

You can put the pellets into a coffee grinder. It pulverizes them.

    hay

I buy hay from a farmer. He lets me inspect the bales to see the types and cuts. Some hay is way too thick for Idgie.

Is this water safe for my chinbabies

I buy purified water. less than a buck a gallon. Lasts me months with one chin.

    Wire bottom spacing

No, she can't. It is a solid sheet on the bottom and tucks under the metal guards on the sides.

    Wire bottom spacing

I took some plastic/plexiglass (actually the cover for a light in a drop ceiling) and covered the whole bottom of my cage. No worries about injury and it is actually easier to clean. Just wipe it down versus trying to clean all those wires.

    Farm Hay vs Store Hay?

I get a bale of "grass" hay--orchard grass, I'd say. (The farmer near me harvests various types of hay.) There is some alfalfa in there, but of course Idgie finds that to be a treat lol. I just go in the barn and pick a bale that I like. And it is for horses. I store it in a big garbage can...

    Questions about malocclusion

Many years ago before forums like this (some of us remember life before the internet lol), I had a chin that was starting to have problems eating pellets. Only having a book from a pet store and a vet that did not know as much about chins as she professed, I thought that I was being helpful by...

Do you think this is bad for my chinchilla at night?

Yes, just don't have it blowing on him

    *sigh* Unsafe pine wood, right?

A good alternative to pine that isn't as rough and doesn't have the knot holes, is poplar. All the home improvement stores carry it. It is usually in flat boards or trim pieces (not 2x4's). Looks better and is smoother. Doesn't cost much more.

    Cage Cleaning

I have a solid bottom on Idgie's cage. I wipe it down with vinegar/water, then just water, and then dry it. Really easy.

    Chin Behaviour Changes with Age?

Idgie has actually slowed down with age. Doesn't want to run around as much/jump as high. To be expected. Not sure that she is any different with affection though. On a good day, she might actually let me hold her for more than a few minutes.

    I wrote a chinchilla book!

Keep us updated on its availability. Might be a good thing to get libraries to buy, along with pet stores, obviously.
