    General Questions

For kits under 6 months they can have unlimited food, Oxbow Essentials is fine, it's considered to be the best chinchilla food, and there is no baby/young version for the chinchilla food like Oxbow has for the rabbit and some of the other rodent foods, it's just one food. If the breeder you are...

    Side sleeping

More often then not sleeping on their side simply means they are comfortable and feel safe. You can look to make sure the temp and humidity are good, since they can also lay on their side if they are over heating or unwell. Since he hopped right up and is acting normal he is likely fine, I'm...

Should I take him to the vet?

I think it might be worth taking him to the vet, even if it's just nervousness again since he is causing physical harm so he may need some calming meds again. Pawing at the mouth could also be a sign something is wrong in his mouth so it's worth getting checked out too.

Help! Blood Everywhere, but no signs of injury

Since it's been going on for a little bit now I would get a vet appointment just to rule out any possible infection. The vet might also have a different ointment that might work better then bag balm as well as prescribe pain meds incase she could be chewing on them because it hurts. Aside from...

Chinchillas for therapy at schools and care homes / mobile circus

I think it would be a terrible idea for 99.9% of chins. First most chins are not suited for that, they would need to be abnormally outgoing and not skittish of strangers at all, and be ok with regular travel which most aren't. Most chins take at least a week if not longer to adjust to a new...

Help! Blood Everywhere, but no signs of injury

Assuming no fighting and you don't have any other animals like a cat the could have scratch them through the cage (cat scratches can be hard to see through the fur, though I would also think the chin(s) would have blood on their fur too), the most common source for a lot of blood in the cage is...

    Just checking in…

So the PetSmart you got the male from was able to tell you the genetic history of him at least a few generations back and he came from a good breeder? If so that is very surprising since most get them from large breeding mills This Is Where Petco And PetSmart Get Their Animals If not genetics...

    Pet insurance?

It depends, in most cases chins are fairly healthy, but as you saw if things do go wrong it can add up quickly. As far as I've heard the only insurance company that accepts chinchillas is https://www.petinsurance.com/exotics/ in the US, but new companies are popping up or adding exotics to their...

    New Chin on the block!

Welcome. I would say he is dark or maybe medium ebony, extra dark ebony is solid black no grey at all.

Also, in case you aren't aware, the males and females will mate with each other even if related, and inbreeding is not a good thing, even if they are from good genetic lines. Mother and father chins will mate with their offspring if given the chance and sisters and brother will mate with each...

Ok so since you are planning to breed I assume you got him from a good breeder from good genetic lines then, and you have already done research into breeding chinchillas. So I would contact the breeder you got Mervyns from then, they would likely be able to help get you a female that fits with...

    Just checking in…

A few things to keep in mind when adding another chinchilla. First it would help if you say where in the world you live, that would help people narrow down what breeders might be in your area. For example I live in Alberta Canada and don't know any breeders around me, let alone any that breed...

    Hello from the UK

The biggest thing is making sure they are eating, drinking, and moving around. Some can get depressed and not move or eat, which can cause issues and make them sick, and in extreme cases even die. You can try rearranging the cage some, if he is ok with that, some chins like the cage rearranged...

    Pre-owning a chinchilla IMPORTANT questions?

    1. I would say it depends on the breed of rabbit you are comparing to, from what I've heard they are similar to the smaller rabbits less friendly rabbits. I've only had larger breed rabbits in the past (french lop mixes) and they were way more laid back then a chinchilla. Also it depends on what...

Any ideas for wooded DIY toys?

I don't know what Twilight Chinchillas uses specifically but food coloring and food coloring markers are safe.

    Giardia Intestinal Parasites

I've never dealt with it, but from what I've heard healthy chins can sometimes get it and not have symptoms until stressed since their immune system is keeping it in check, so sometimes they can test positive but not be "sick" from it. As far as cleaning make sure you wash after handling him...

    Preparing willow sticks

It's pretty much the same for all wood. I'm not sure you need to boil willow twice though, but if the water is murky after the first boil it wont hurt to boil again.

Benign fatty tumor on Chinno's neck (lipoma ?)

I've never had a fatty tumor on a chin, but I know with cats it's not uncommon for them to shrink and even go away on their own once they get down to a better weight. I would look at their diet and make sure you aren't giving any treats or over feeding. That looks like quite a bit of weight...

    Urine on chinchillas fur

Just use unscented baby wipes or a lightly damp towel, then dry him off and give a dust bath. If you really want to try to get the stain to go away faster you can add about a table spoon of cornstarch into the dust, but make sure he doesn't eat it. The staining should lessen with each bath.

What happened to TJ's Chinchilla Supplies?

The only info I can find online is the owner was diagnosed with cancer 8 years ago. Maybe it has something to do with that?
