A not so new owner with new chinchillas!

As herbivores, they do require high fiber, but not high protein. The Pro formula that you are feeding has a maximum fiber content of 21%. The Sho formula which people are recommending to you has a maximum fiber content of 23%, which is more desirable. The two formulas have the same protein...

    Iditarod 2011

Abusing dogs during the race is forbidden, and if a musher is caught doing it, they're summarily disqualified.

    Bizarre Craigslist stuff

Well, to be fair, we don't KNOW they're hogs; after all, he repeatedly called them "bores", not "boars". :P I'm not sure what a "wild bore" is, aside from being an oxymoron.

    Iditarod 2011

There's a really good book that Gary Paulsen wrote about his experience running the Iditarod, called Winterdance. I had no idea just how insane that race is before I read that book.

    Kindle the Bunny!

Cute! What a little puff ball! Just curious, how did he get the name "Kindle"? (In rabbits, "kindle" is the term for "give birth".)

    question about bedding

In terms of dustiness, Carefresh is no worse than pine or aspen shavings. In fact, I've always found Carefresh to be significantly LESS dusty than shavings.

    Same feed. Different packaging.

    Calling all bunny people:

Chocolate point is not the same thing as chocolate pointed white. "Chocolate pointed white" is the same thing as "chocolate Himalayan". The term that people use mostly depends on the breed.

    Calling all bunny people:

She's almost certainly a Netherland dwarf. In Netherland dwarfs, her color is called Himalayan (chocolate Himi to be exact, as others have pointed out). "Pointed white" is a term used for the Himalayan/Californian coloring in some other breeds, such as Jersey woolies. The reason I think she's a...

    Would you consider this?

When I was in high school and had to do volunteer hours, they had to be done with an actual organization. (I volunteered with a 4-H club in the area, for example.) I personally would not allow people I don't know to come into my house and mess with my animals. How did they find out about you...

Is it incorrect to be under the impression that-

Hey, rabbits aren't rodents! I think you're right in that chins are often misunderstood in terms of their needs. I don't know that they're THE most misunderstood rodents out there, but they're up there. Even Oxbow, one of the top chinchilla feed mills, puts out misinformation on...

    Got Parrots?

You might want to try attending a couple of bird fairs in your area and talking to people there. I don't know where you are in MO, but there's a bird expo in Kansas City next Saturday. You can find information here...

Holy cow, those guys are adorable! Sorry you lost two of them.

The name game..what in your chins name?

Kahlua is named for her color. Bella just seemed like a good name for a pretty violet. I've had people say, "oh, you're a Twilight fan?" NO! I named Bella before I'd ever heard of the book series, and if I had read Twilight before I got my chins I would never have named my girl Bella.

    Rabbit Pellet

It depends. Some people swear by Manna Pro and others would take Nutrena any day. But really, both are good feeds and either would be fine. If you just can't decide, maybe check the labels and see if there's a Mill Date (the date that the feed was made) and take whichever one is more fresh.

    Rabbit Pellet

Many of the above brands that the other posters and I have mentioned can't typically be found in pet stores (at least not in the chain stores like PetCo or Petsmart). You might have to try a farm supply store such as TSC, or your local feed/grain Co-Op. Check out the websites for each of those...

    Rabbit Pellet

Good rabbit feed brands include: Purina (If you're not showing or breeding, the Purina Rabbit Chow Complete in the green bag is what I'd recommend. The Show formula has high fat content that is not necessary for pet-only rabbits.) Manna Pro (I'd go with the regular Pro or possibly Sho if your...
