How much do you feed your chin(s)?

Free feed. Chins don't overeat and won't get overweight on a good quality pellet.

What treats do you give your chins?

Wooden sticks... I don't give food item treats anymore except on a very rare occasion.

    Concerned about chinchilla

The soft cluster poos are cecotropes, which a healthy chinchilla normally eats in order to extract all the nutrients from the food they eat. A chin that has soft poo and does not eat the cecal pellets has something going on with his digestive tract. I do not condone the feeding of any fruits...

    Hay cubes

I give cubes once a week and any remaining when I clean cages just gets thrown away. If they're going to eat it, they normally eat it in the first couple days.

    Bulk Hay?

I buy my hay by the bale and just store it on a shelf in my garage. I bring in a couple flakes at a time in a feed bag. As long as it is kept away from the elements, it stores well and is good for many months.

Questions with Bene Bac, Baytril, and Simethicone

For a probiotic, I prefer breaking open capsules of acidophilus and sprinkling it in the hand feeding mixture. For minor gut issues, simethicone and belly massages are all that I do in addition to hand feeding CC if they don't eat on their own. If there is a lot less poo, I get motility drugs...

    Eye Irritation

You might need somebody to hold the chin so you can apply the eye drops or ointment. I normally hold the chin with one hand and squeeze out the drops or gel ointment with my right

Chinchilla doesn't like to eat hay?

Variety is helpful for picky hay eaters. You can rotate or mix different types. A grass hay such as timothy should be your staple but you can "treat" them with a bit of grain hay such as oat hay or a bit of a legume hay such as alfalfa. Other common grass hays are bluegrass, brome, orchard...

    whiskers?

It does not hurt them to lose or have bent whiskers. Dominant chins chew the whiskers off of their cagemate and some will even trim whiskers of an aggressive dominant chin to put their chins on a more even playing field during introductions.

    Eye Irritation

I keep Vetericyn ophthalmic ointment on hand in case of eye irritation. It can help lubricate and serve as a disinfectant if it is just scratched and irritated or has a minor infection. If that doesn't clear it up, then it is something that would need vet attention and a prescription for...

Seeking a reputable Chinchilla breeder in San Diego, CA

Sandy Dumitru is in the San Diego area. Also, there will be a chinchilla show in Southern California on January 24-25 and there will be breeders from all over the Western US in attendance. Is there something you are looking for? I also have some animals for sale and will be attending that show.

That humidity level is fine. A high humidity level combined with high temperatures is what is dangerous.

Help! Chin mom attacking her babies...

I'd keep them with the foster mom as long as the kits all seem to be getting enough milk and are not squabbling with one another. How old is her current kit?
