    related breeding chinchillas

The more closely related two chins are, the higher the likelihood that they may be both carrying recessive genes that may cause health issues in their offspring. Half siblings are generally recognized as a safe cross. If linebreeding must be done, I always outcross to a completely unrelated...

*Emergency* Chin With Broken Arm. No Vet Open.

Vet ASAP. Amputation would be the best option as chins do just fine with missing paws or limbs and it doesn't seem to inhibit them. Splints/casts often cause more difficulty and lengthened recovery times and many times, it does not heal properly. Good luck!

    Chinchilla Cancer?

Was the vet experienced with chinchillas? Malo or an abscess seems much more likely.

    Possible Bumble Foot?

Severe bumble foot will require antibiotics prescribed by a vet. Bumblefoot can also be treated with daily soaks in chlorine solution which is an antiseptic and applying Bag Balm to the pads of the feet. You also want to ensure all surfaces in the cage are clean. However, chins do normally...

If you could start over in breeding *scenerio*

I would spend as much needed for the absolute best quality standard male from a National show (I would expect around $500 based on previous purchases) and use the rest of the money for the best females I could find that would compliment him. It's pretty much what I already do every year or so...

    Puberty signs?

I often see my 4-5 month males start with dominance mounting and humping of their cagemates. A couple weeks ago, I had a female in heat and her mate was repeatedly breeding with her. I had two 4 month weanling boys in a neighboring cage and that neighboring female being in heat sent them into...

    Timothy vs orchard grass?

Timothy and orchard are both grass hays and fine as a staple hay. What's most important is the quality of the hay. Because of the drought in CA this yr, most of the hay has been really bad (and expensive!) I have found some nice bales though that were shipped in from OR.

    Useful Items In Stores

I like the lava items (Bites, perches) and the wood perches... and that's about all I'll buy at the pet stores! I get the rest of my items in bulk.

Tips/Tricks/Ideas for Introducing Dominant Chinnie to a Shy One?

I trim whiskers of dominant chins when doing intros. I put them in wire-sided carriers right by each other overnight and once they ignore each other through the bars, I release them in a neutral cage together. I have also put the dominant chin in a small show cage inside the regular cage for an...

    Female chin spraying urine

It's just a defense mechanism. If they are chased and cornered, feel threatened or are feeling agitated, females may stand up and spray urine. I've also seen females spray one another while fighting over the water bottle if it was empty and just refilled. Your chin basically did not like you...
