Chin Slave
Well I took my Richie to an exotic specialist yesterday an hour away. She did an exam, took x-rays, took blood, extracted a molar, filed some teeth & gave meds......$707 dollars and 6 hours later, he was home in his cage actually eating!
My first vet was on the right track, he has a mouth infection, unfortunatly it is chronic & he definitely has malo. He also had a little GI stasis.
She basically told me.........do I want THIS chinchilla or A chinchilla. Because with meds and lots of care, Richie can live comfortably for some time, of course not the expected 10 - 15 years I had hoped but a couple/few years.
He would require medication & frequent vet visits, so if i have the money, time and love that we can start there. You would never know he was sick by looking at him this morning. Bouncing, eating, drinking, etc.......
She gave him Metacam for the pain, Batril for the infection & Cisapro to get the gut moving.
She is a fellow scrapbooker & she brought my camera into the room so i have attached some pix of what they did to him and also of his x-rays.
Of course this is not the news i wanted to hear, so I am going to let this course of meds go thru, see how he does over the next few months and decide from there. I dont want him in pain and when it comes time for that I will put him down. I am also trying to ease both my son and myself into losing him..........which is not an easy task.
If you are in the NJ area and need an exotic specialist, they are amazing at the Oakhurst animal hospital. The facilities are amazing and the doctors are top rate............very pricey though!!!
So..........keep my richie in your thoughts (and me too cause having to give 3 types of meds twice a day is very taxing!! )
