I know using clay and paper litter is asking for impaction, but what about ground walnut shells? I figure if it's safe for her to use it might make cleaning her "litter" tray a little simpler.

Also, how often should I be changing the shavings if I keep her on aspen? It seems like I'm tossing the whole thing every ten minutes because she's soaked it through.

Since walnuts and walnut wood is not safe for chins I would say no. It's also not advised to use for rabbits, is poisonous to reptiles and dogs and is not safe for birds if they have access to it and eat it.

Most people seem to change the litter pan at least once a day if not a couple times a day, maybe your pan is too small or not using enough litter?
