At night after an hour of playtime, my male chin always lets off a musky odor right before I go to bed while I'm giving him his nightly scritches. I would have looked this up but didn't know how to properly phrase it really...(?) When he releases the odor he makes a very distinct cooing sound and his tail waggles from side to side. I was just curious about the functionality of it/what causes this/what it's even called.

It's called flirting...lol. Just means you're boy is happy and content, kind of the equivalent to purring, (and in some cases, ready to get it on). This behavior is completely normal.
