Hey guys, I got my little guy, Oliver, a little over 24 hours ago and I'm sure I'm just worrying for no reason but he hasn't really been doing much. I've sat by his cage and watched him explore but he hasn't gotten into chewing his toys or running on the wheel (he actually hides behind it). He's eaten and from what I can tell drank a bit from his bottle. His poops are definitely normal (and everywhere haha). I've been able to hand him timothy hay through the cage and I put a treat in my hand which coaxed him over enough to stand on my hand a little and then scurry away. Just a little bit ago I was sitting by his cage watching him and talking to him and eventually he backed into what seems like his favorite corner and slowly shut his eyes (which I thought was adorable) so I figured he must not be too threatened by me if he'll shut his eyes while I'mm sitting right there.

All sounds perfectly normal for the behaviour of a newly aquired chinchilla. Eating, drinking, pooping and peeing are the main areas to watch for, and all sounds good. Adjusting to a new home takes time and varies with each chin. Just let him go at his own pace. Hope you enjoy being a chin parent. :)

it can a good while for a chin to adjust. They have new cages, new ppl, new surroundings, new smells, new sounds... new everything to get used to. They are prey animals by nature and are naturally going to be scared. So they often times wont be doing all to much after getting to a new place.

Give him time. That's a lot to adjust to in a short amount of time. Some chins settle in a few days and others can take a few months. He will explore and play when he feels more comfortable

My chin was the same. Explored then sat in one space for a few hours. Only ate like 3 pellets and a tiny bit of water. Hay wasn't touched for 2 days. Didnt pee until about 3 or 4 days after I got him. Pooped about 3 times. Chewed a tiny bit of a hanging toy and didnt touch anything else. Didn't move when I opened the cage door. Made no noise at all. Oh how I wish he was still as tidy as that lol
