Dust baths

I've read that a good rule of thumb for dust baths is once every other day, but that it varies by chin. I've also read that if you blow on their fur and it doesn't immediately go back in place that they need a dust bath. Is this true? I've also heard that if you gently run your fingers over their fur and if a lot of fur comes off that they need a bath. Are either/both of these somewhat reliable or should they just be taken with a grain of salt?

I give mine a bath twice a week unless it is show season. If it is show season once a day for 3 weeks before a show. The other stuff about blowing into their fur, running a finger over the fur I don't know about that.
