Do chinchillas shed? (Pic)

My chinchillas fur has been looking kind of mangy the past week....is he shedding or could it be something else?

Sorry for the bad picture but he moves so quickly!

Your chin is probably priming. Priming is very similar to shedding, except it usually has a distinct starting point. Mine is priming right now too and her butt is SUPER fluffy. Here's some information about it: http://www.sunsetchinchillas.com/Priming.shtml

Like others have stated, it is most likely priming. The process can take awhile. Anytime I notice one of my chins priming, I use a #3 grooming comb to help remove the dead fur. Not necessary, but it is something you can do.

Btw, I converted the picture into a link, since it was fairly large and stretching the forum. This way people with slower computers won't have problems. )

just wondering...do all chinchillas go through priming? i've had giz for about 2 years now and he hasnt done this

My standard is going through this now....How long does it usually last?

They all go through priming, it's just that the ones with thicker fur show it more.
