Hello Everyone!
I am new to the Chins n’ Hedgies website, but I have owned chinchillas for many years and used this website for a number of years without joining. I apologize if I post this in the wrong section, but I figure this would be most beneficial for soon-to-be or new owners of chinchillas. I noticed that there was a lack of information on how much it costs to own a chinchilla, which I believe may be helpful for those that are thinking about becoming chin parents. I have written up the figures of how much it cost me (startup cost and yearly cost). I had two chinchillas up until three months ago, but unfortunately I had to rehome one due to him attacking the other. I tried to keep him, but he was starting to make the victim chinchilla starve to death. I had no other safe place for him in my home, so I had no other choice but to rehome him. I will be adding my costs as if I had two and then provide a separate figure chart for just one. I do want to note that I tend to shop at DrsFoster&Smith.com and my local pet store rather than PetSmart and Petco.
The prices of items may be increased or decreased depending upon where you live.
I have provided links for everything I have listed to the best of my ability while finding the lowest prices for items. I hope that this will help future chin parents in helping them make the decision to care for one of these cute balls of fluff!

Initial Cost:
1 Chinchilla ($150.00 *Standard; Nobu* at PetSmart)
1 Chinchilla ($200.00 *Homozygous Beige; Kiyoshi* from a private breeder)
1 Starter Cage ($149.99 *Cage was destroyed within a few months)
http://www.petsmart.com/supplies/ca...xotics-cage-zid36-5207134/cat-36-catid-600022
1 Cage ($200.00 *Cage lasted a few years. I could not find it due to it no longer being made, but I will provide a picture. It was nearly all plastic and the Beige one destroyed it)
1 Cage ($195.95+free shipping *I paid $225.00 for this cage originally. This is the one that my single chinchilla is in now. It has all metal shelves and ramps. I took out the bottom wire rack since my single chinchilla does not like to chew on plastic. I also do not use the ramps since they can injure themselves. There are other cages on that website which are made of metal and are very high quality. Highly recommend for those that have chewers! I have provided the links to the other cages at the bottom of this post.)

1 Igloo, Large ($12.99 *Bought this from a local petstore and I do not recommend this for those that have chinchillas that chew a lot. I only use it for my single one since he does not like plastic)
1 bag of Kaytee Timothy hay ($4.99 *I could only purchase this when I got Nobu since PetSmart did not sell Oxbow at the time. I now buy Nobu Oxbow timothy hay since it is a better quality. This Kaytee Timothy hay lasted 4 months since Nobu is not big on hay and now will only eat the cube Oxbow Timothy hay).

1 bag of Kaytee Chinchilla food ($9.99 *I cannot find the original Kaytee without the fruits and stuff in it, so I am using this one as a close comparison to what I originally bought Nobu. Again, there was no Oxbow products at PetSmart when I bought Nobu. He now eats only Oxbow since it is a better quality chinchilla food. Lasted about 1 month with just Nobu while with Kiyoshi it lasted 2 weeks).

1 bag of Oxbow Timothy hay, Botanical ($4.99 *You can buy this at Drs.Foster&Smith for this price. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=30232
1 bag of Oxbow Deluxe Chinchilla Food ($16.99 *Price at Drs.Foster&Smith. Again, I could not buy this at the time I bought Nobu. I bought Kaytee since that was all they had at the time)

1 bag of CareFRESH, 25.7 L ($22.99 *Priced at PetSmart. I used this litter for many years along with the white one of this; however, I now use Oxbow litter since it lasts a lot longer and it actually expands up to 3x its original size).

2 Ceramic Chinchilla Dust Houses, Large ($20.00 a piece=$40.00 *I bought this at PetSmart a long time ago, but it appears that they no longer sell it. I also cannot find it on Amazon for chinchillas)
1 Chinchilla Dust, All Living Things 3lbs ($10.49 *Lasted Nobu about 6 months while it lasted only 3 months. I was giving them a bath everyday till I realized that it was drying out their skin. I now only give them a bath 2-3 times a week)

Cost of Owning 2 Chinchilla per year (*Note: I tend to buy a lot of toys for two reasons. Cost of Owning 2 Chinchilla per year

Now for the cost per year for each chinchilla. I will put the cost for owning 2 chinchillas first before owning 1 chinchilla.

(*Note: I tend to buy a lot of toys for two reasons. One was due to Kyo being a big chewer and he would destroy everything before Nobu had the chance to gnaw at it. The second reason is due to them not eating much hay, so I give them a lot of toys to help keep their teeth filed down. I also took them to the vet to make sure their teeth were healthy and make sure that they are in top condition).

Initial Cost (When I got my 1st Chinchilla, Nobu)

Looks like my posts were not added. I had links tied to the post, which I believe might be the reason why. Let me try again. :)

Initial Cost (When I got my 1st Chinchilla, Nobu):
1 Chinchilla ($150.00 *Standard; Nobu* at PetSmart)
1 Starter Chinchilla Cage ($149.99 *PetSmart. Cage was destroyed when I got my second chinchilla, so it lasted a year)
1 Igloo, Large ($12.99 *Bought this from a local petstore and I do not recommend this for those that have chinchillas that chew a lot. I only use it for my single one since he does not like plastic)
1 bag of Kaytee Timothy hay ($4.99 *I could only purchase this when I got Nobu since PetSmart did not sell Oxbow at the time).
1 bag of Kaytee Chinchilla food ($9.99 *I cannot find the original Kaytee without the fruits and stuff in it, so I am using this one as a close comparison to what I originally bought Nobu. Again, there was no Oxbow products at PetSmart when I bought Nobu.).
1 bag of CareFRESH, 25.7 L ($22.99 *Priced at PetSmart. I used this litter for many years along with the white one of this; however, I now use Oxbow litter since it lasts a lot longer and it actually expands up to 3x its original size).
1 Plastic water bottle ($5.49 *Did not last for 2 months due to Kyo destroying the bottle)
1 Ceramic Bowl, 5 oz. ($4.99 *Price at PetSmart at the time; I replaced this with a metal bowl that attaches to the cage since the chinchillas kept throwing litter into their bowl when they played, not to mention Kyo would tip it over).
1 Lava Ledge ($6.99 *Price at PetSmart)
1 Nut Knot Nibbler ($3.99 *PetSmart price)
1 bag of Chew blocks ($3.99 *Price at PetSmart)
1 Vet Visit ($50 *Local Vet that does Exotics*)
1 Ceramic Chinchilla Dust Houses, Large ($19.99 *I bought this at PetSmart a long time ago, but it appears that they no longer sell it. I also cannot find it on Amazon for chinchillas)
1 Chinchilla Dust, All Living Things 3lbs ($10.49 *PetSmart*)
1 Pet Carrier, Grreat Choice ($14.99 *I did not have this same bag, but it had less ventilation. I replaced it with a carrier that I use for my cats since I rarely take him to the vet).
1 box of raisins ($1.00 *Dollar Tree; Treats*)
1 Dust pan w/ Brush ($1.00 *Dollar Tree; Sweeping poop off floor*)
1 White Vinegar, 32 oz. ($1.00 *Dollar Tree; Cleaning Cage*)
2 Scrub Brush ($2.00 *Dollar Tree; 1 for Cleaning Cage & 1 for Cleaning bowl)
1 Bottle Cleaner ($2.99 * PetSmart; Cleaning Water Bottle)
1 bowl ($1.00 *Dollar Tree; For cleaning cage)
1 Hay Rack ($5.99 *PetSmart*)
1 Chin Chillers ($9.99 *PetSmart*)

Grand Total: $496.84 + 0.06 ($29.81; WV Sales Tax) = $526.65

Additional Costs with 2nd Chinchilla (Replacement Cages & Bowls, Change of Food, Etc.

1 Chinchilla ($200.00 *Homozygous Beige; Kyo* from a private breeder)
1 Cage ($200.00 *Cage lasted 2 years. I could not find it due to it no longer being made, but I will provide a picture. It was nearly all plastic and Kyo one destroyed it)
1 Cage ($195.95+free shipping *I paid $225.00 for this cage originally. I purchased the cage from Exotic Nutrition, which specializes in small animals like chinchillas)
1 bag of Oxbow Timothy hay, Botanical ($4.99 *You can buy this at Drs.Foster&Smith for this price. I could not buy this at the time I bought Nobu since they did not have Oxbow at the store at the time. Lasted about 4 months since I only had Nobu. This was when he was more accepting of loose hay. He will only eat cube hay now)
1 bag of Oxbow Deluxe Chinchilla Food ($16.99 *Price at Drs.Foster&Smith.
1 Glass water bottle ($9.89 *Price at PetSmart. I had to replace the plastic one with this since Kyo destroyed the other. Glass bottles are a must for chewers).
1 Bolt-Lock Metal Bowl, Small ($2.99 *Price at Drs.Foster&Smith; I replaced the ceramic bowl for this one since Kyo kept getting litter into the ceramic one and was pooping in it. It works wonderfully, especially for avid chewers!)
1 Lava Ledge ($6.99 *Price at PetSmart. It lasts about 2 months for Nobu, but it only lasted about a week to two weeks with Kyo)
1 Nut Knot Nibbler ($3.99 *Lasts Nobu about 4 months while with Kyo it only lasted about 3 days)
1 bag of Chew blocks ($3.99 *Lasts Nobu about 2 months while Kyo it lasted 2 days)
1 Vet Visit ($50 *Local Vet that does Exotics. This was just for Kyo since Nobu did not need to go to the vet)
1 Ceramic Chinchilla Dust Houses, Large ($19.99 *I bought this one on Amazon since PetSmart stopped selling it. I cannot find it on Amazon now, at least not for chinchillas)
1 Travel Carrier ($29.99 *Drs.Foster&Smith; I bought the medium one due to having cats & it was on sale; I felt that the small would have been too tight for 2 chinchillas. Note: This is the sale price for the medium, otherwise it is $39.99. The small carrier would best to suit a single or two chinchillas and it is $29.99 on DrsFoster&Smith.com)
1 box of raisins ($1.00 *Dollar Tree; Treats*)
Apple sticks ($0.00 *Have an untreated apple tree in the backyard)
Cardboard boxes ($0.00 *Use boxes from shipments from Drs.Foster&Smith)
1 Chin Chillers ($9.99 *PetSmart*)

Grand Total: $779.74 + $0.06 ($46.78; WV sales tax) = $826.52

Thank you for posting all of this. I think it will help a lot of people realize how expensive chincillas are and prevent people from getting pets that they can't afford. I wish I would've seen something like this before I got into chins, but thankfully I was still able to afford mine and I don't regret getting her.

For anyone reading this in the future, since that is who it seems to be for do not just use any spare fabrics for hammocks a chinchillas are likely to chew on it which can cause serious blockages that could require surgery or worse kill the chinchilla. Fleece is the only safe fabric and even that is only if they don't chew it. Just because they aren't chewing it now doesn't mean they won't start.

The same goes for plastic. All plastic needs to be covered with fleece or removed. If you have plastic houses or ledges you can easily and cheaply replace it with kiln dried pine from the hardware store.

When it comes to treats don't feed surgary treats like raisins or most store treats. Use plain old fashioned oats or plain mini wheats (unsweetened)

Also to save on hay check your local farm supply store in the horse section an you can usually find 50lbs of hay bales and hay cubes for around $15-20. A 50 lbs bag of cubes lasts my pair at least a year.

Thanks KrystalTears, I'm trying not to think what I have/am spending and I haven't got my FurBaby yet! :~)
Seriously even though I'm in UK it is good to have an idea of the cost of bringing up these little ones.

This was my first post so I did not realize that my posts would show up later. Sorry for sending in the same information 3 times! I hope this helps future chinparents in deciding if these wonderful little ones are right for them. :)

I was trying to figure out how much money I have spent in my chinchillas. I believe people should properly research any pet that they wish to acquire, which I always found it hard to find this information. I too wish I had information like this since I never realized how expensive chinchillas happen to be. I was 13 when I got my first one so I did not know that they were a lot more expensive than a rabbit (I had rabbits growing up until I became allergic to them. It is actually because of my allergy that I decided to get a chinchilla since I missed having rabbits).

I would agree that it is best not to have plastic in the cage. I only put it in my cage with my chinchilla since he cannot stand to chew plastic and I inspect it a few times a day everyday. I am looking for another hideaway house that he will actually go into since he is very particular about what he will use. With anything that is not made of safe woods, it is always best to inspect the article everyday to make sure there is no danger to the pet. :)
I should have put that I only give my chinchilla raisins about once every two months due to the sugar. I end up purchasing new boxes of raisins due to freshness. They get other treats like oats, but I did not include that into the budget since I eat it too. lol. :)
There are cheaper places to get it, as you pointed out. But if you live in the city or do not have access to a farm store, then you can save money by buying hay in bulk from petstore websites, such as DrsFoster&Smith. For those unfamiliar with hay, make sure it does not have a moldy smell or that it is not wet when purchasing from any store that you can physically pick up the item. Once hay loses its aroma, color, or flavor then it should be replaced. Hay can be kept fresher longer by putting it in air tight storage containers, which is ideal if you buy hay in bulk. :)

I did not make this post to scare anyone off from becoming chinparents, honest! :) I just want people to be informed that chinchillas are not cheap pets, as what most people will say. I posted this since I wish I had a cost sheet when deciding to purchase my chinchillas. I believe that this information is very helpful in making the decision to own a chinchilla since one usually wants to take the very best care of their little ones! :)
I am glad that this has helped you despite it being American prices. :)
