Chewing on back toes?

I noticed today that Chinchy seems to be chewing on his back inside toes from time to time, the same toe on each foot. I saw him sort of nibble at it, and the skin doesn't look broken, just a little pink and irritated. I wonder what I can do to make him stop doing that and also whether there's an ointment I can use on the skin to make lessen the irritation and help the skin heal. Thanks for any help!

If the skin is not flaky, which could indicate fungus, you can put some vitamin E oil on it.
