    New to site...newbie with Chin

I'm not sure which "exotics" vet you are referring to (if it's the one in North Austin I'd suggest never going back - I've never had a good experience with them)... my top two vet offices are White Rock in Pflugerville (Dr Riggan is awesome, but any of them are good) and Westgate Pet and Bird in...

    Craigslist FN

I've gotten two CN's off CL, I paid $50 for one, and the other was $75... but that one came with about $150 of stuff (ledges, toys, etc) from Whimsy's Menagerie, so honestly I would have paid more, but that's what the seller was asking. I'm always shocked when I see people trying to sell them...

    Definitely male :)

    Homemade wheels

I made a DIY wheel but I honestly wouldn't really recommend it - I used sealed bearings so mine is mostly quiet, but it's not super stable (still trying to figure out how to reinforce the base of the pan I used as the wheel) and it really wasn't cheaper than buying one.

Can chins reach through CN cage bars?

I keep a large plastic storage container on top of my CN and they haven't been able to chew that, but smaller items, like wood toys and even the snapware container I keep their food in, they have been able to nibble on through the bars.

    Play pen? Will this work?

I have two of them (I managed to snag them on sale for just $30 each), and it works out to be a pretty perfect size for my chins :) I like that the wire spacing (vertical bars, about 12" between horizontal bars) keeps them from climbing out. They might be able to jump out (mine haven't tried)...

Desperately need metal pans for ferret nation cage

If you are still using the original plastic pans you can make it chew-resistant and keep stray bedding/poos in by making a set of scatter guards like these for the bottom of the cage: I actually got a set of these included with a CN that I bought off CL, they worked surprisingly well until I...

What all should I know before getting a chin?

So many of them are not even truly safe for birds....

Eye problem? Vet says she is healthy but I'm not convinced

To be 100% honest, a complete oral exam should involve sedation/anesthesia, otherwise they're just making a "best guess" based on what they can see with a squirming animal (not to mention the risk of injury involved in restraining a chin to do this), and I guarantee it's not going to reveal...

Baby Kit Eating Solid Food Early

I thought babies weren't supposed to have access to wheels?

I Really Need a Way to Attach Playpen to Cage please help

I don't think anyone is clear on just what exactly you are asking about.... please try to make more sense and perhaps you will get more helpful answers. The post above has about all of the information you really NEED to figure this out, it's clear you're just not trying.

    The new cage.

I have one of these and it's very nicely made and I think it will last a very long time - but only one of my chins will run on it, the other will only run on the silver surfer (the other chin does run on both wheels equally).

    Plastic Base

What kind of cage is it (brand/model)?

    Product Reviews!

I've had similar results with the Kaytee glass water bottles - the spouts just don't dispense water reliably... just a few drops, then nothing, if they dispense any at all. I think it has to do with the design, water bubbles just don't exit on the inside of the bottle to let more water in...

    Cage Upgrades

Agreed, the ceramic bath you linked is very small, it's really not much bigger than your fist - I have one and I actually use it as a cute hay container. Some people liked the bigger (now discontinued) chinchilla sized ones just to use as a house/hide - because the ceramic stays cool, but...

    Custom cage built by us!

The symmetry of this cage makes me very happy for reasons I can't quite explain :)

    Happy Squeaking?

One of mine squeaks (though it's very quiet) when she's excited - she did it the very first time she had her wheel, and she's also done it with new toys and with very fresh hay.

    FN vs CN??

This is kind of misleading. I have a silver surfer in each of my CN's (and one in a FN) and they weren't that hard to mount securely, and I did only minimal modification to the wheels... all I did was bend the hanger "hooks" about 1/4" from the bottom so they were short enough to fit through...

    Argh! Craigslist people!!

This one astonishes me... http://austin.craigslist.org/mob/4878775811.html $600 for "baby" grey chin and cage/toys/accessories. The cage looks like some kind of hamster cage (not very big). What really baffles me are the posts where someone claims that chinchillas sell for $350 at petstores -...

    Cage trouble

You can normally pick up FN's and CN's cheaply on craigslist... I just got a FN for only $50, it was cheap because it was missing all of the trays, which I didn't want anyways.
