How long have you had her? I wouldn't be worried unless you notice some other health problem. It sounds like she is making a "warning" call. My chins make that noise too.

Definitely sounds like a warning call to me. My boys make this noise every now and then, although, maybe I should have had the volume down because I looked at the clip on my laptop sitting next to their cage and they both just started freaking out and jumping all over the place. I had to calm them down with a little critter cookie.

Thanks Chinmama for your reply!

I've had her since May 19, so just over 2 weeks now. I'll still keep close watch.

I notice she likes to sit in the front corner of the cage and just stare off...in space, or looks like she's day dreaming or something is that normal for chinnys??

Hi 3chinsowner,

Awww sorry to startle your chins like that. So when you watched my videos your chins went wild? Hope they are good now.

ditto to what everyone else said. Just talk to her softly and hopefully she'll start to feel comfortable.

She seems to have been startled by something and is making the warning call in response. I would guess that it was something on the TV that I heard in the background. She will be fine. It is a normal sound and you will be hearing every so often.

My 7-mth female makes that kinda sounds too, not everyday, but sometimes... maybe 3 times a week. My sis and I have no idea what's going on. On the other hand, her 9-mth female cagemate has never make those sounds. I wonder why my younger chin does that...

That is a "barking" chinchilla. It is a warning call chances are she heard something that you didn't so she is warning everyone (I don't know who that everyone might be lol)

We have all agreed that a lot of times they do it for attention. My dominant one, Gizmo, will do it every so often in the evenings where their playtime is a bit shortened after she goes back in as if to say come let me out more

My boy has made that noise too. Probably 4 times in the month that we've had him, and all 4 times were relatively close together. Since it was only happening REALLY early in the morning, we thought he was just reacting to the train that passes by in the distance. But after the last time he did it, I opened the kitchen cabinet and found mouse terds! I'm seriously convinced Baxter was hearing a mouse around the apartment, and was reacting to that!
