My darling husband and I have been talking about the plans for redoing Bells' cage. She's currently housed in a SuperPet and I'm on a mission to remove as much plastic as possible just to make it more chin friendly (and safer!).

The first thing we plan to do is remove the shelves and replace them with wooden ones. My question is about cleaning. With the SP plastic shelves I can just pop them out and wash them off (removing urine, namely).

What is your cleaning process for wooden shelves? Does the wood absorb urine and/or smells?

Thanks for sharing!

Hi. I use pine shelves in all 3 of my cages and they're great. They can stain if you leave them too long to clean but I clean once a week and use a pet safe disinfectant spray that's available here in the UK. I'm sure any liquid cleaning product you use would work, I know some people use vinegar. I spray it onto the shelves so they're evenly covered and leave it for a minute or so and then just wipe them with kitchen roll, (paper towel). Any dirt, poop etc just wipes straight off and they're pretty much good as new except for a few chew marks! Have fun arranging your cage.

For my wooden shelves I use a spray bottle with a water/vinegar mix and spray them down and then wipe them off with paper towel.

If there's any staining I just take a hand sanding block and sand it off.

You can also really soak them and dry them out in the oven if you're worried about bacteria, but I've never had any issues with just wiping them off and sanding.

I use peroxide to clean the shelves. I just wet a paper towel with it, wipe down the shelves and let it dry. Peroxide does not leave a harmful residue and it will beach those pee stains right out of the shelves.

Interesting. I have been cleaning with vinegar but had not considered peroxide. Thanks for sharing!
