Hi,

I was wondering what kinds of wood are ok for chins to chew on? I know of apple wood but I don't think my guy likes it. And are pumice stones and loofahs ok for them to chew on? Also on a previous forum I saw someone suggest Pet Products By Nature. I was looking at ordering either a variety pak, a scrap pak, or the niblits. Does anyone know if everything in those 3 options are good for chins?

Thanks
Amanda

I have a general list of safe & unsafe woods on my website: http://www.chinnation.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=15&Itemid=29

Pumice and loofah are okay as well, as long as the loofah is not treated with any chemicals. Suppliers that sell loofah on here are selling safe loofah for your chins.

Everything in those packs by Pet Products By Nature are safe for chins. Many of us order from PPBN and the chins love the wood. :))

Awesome. Thank you so much. I think I will be making an order for my guy soon. :)

I love Pet Product By Nature and have bought a lot from them. Edgar loves a variety but I think that his favorite is the big cholla logs. I also like being able to make my own toys with chain and binder clips so I can remove the pieces he's done chewing on. Like many chinchillas he's pretty much done with the wood once he's chewed the bark off.

My two chins love their elm chew sticks and I like buying the variety pack just a pound since it really lasts a while.

I just recently prepared my own wood and they seem to not even like it. I guess they favor Barbi's wood over my own

I'm looking into preparing my own wood for my chins. I think its ridiculous to pay so much for wood when its laying around free outside! Ya, I'm cheap like that :) Haha. But I can't find a list anywhere that includes maple trees. Does anyone know if maple is safe or unsafe? Also, what about walnut trees?

If it is not on the safe list, don't use it. You may think you're getting of cheap now, but you have no idea what those trees have been treated with, etc. All you're going to end up with is a huge vet bill and possibly a sick or dead chin.

Thats what I'm trying to avoid. I don't want to make my chins sick, thats why I'm asking. My parents have 5 acres of land back home that is full of trees that we planted before I was born. Mainly pine, walnut, and maple. So I was hoping to get wood from my house. but like I said I haven't found maple on either the "safe" or "unsafe" list. So what is it?!

...and NO walnut or pine (unless the pine is kiln dried.)

Preparing your own wood is not as simple as it sounds, trust me. I'll gladly pay for wood that's ready to be chewed before I'll go through that!
