Almost two months ago I purchased my first Chin. She is so much fun and is doing great. At the time of purchase I had debated on purchasing two chins at the same time.. Because of the cost and the fact that I was brand new to chins I decided to only get the one.... after just as short while of new chin ownership I decided to purchase another chin as compainion to my first. I could have kicked myself for not purhcasing both at the same time as the breeder had to bring them a great distance from another state.
The breeder of the chins is comeing agian to my state and will be bringing me my second chin next week. ( This girl is such a saint... She will be bringing the chin I decided not to purchase only to change my mind a few weeks later about. My question is this. At the time (almost a month and half ago) my chin and this new chin were cage mates briefly as the breeder had them together for about a week before transporting them to my state... They seemed to get along fine at the time. They traveled well together. Both are around 3,or 4 months old. Do you think they will remember each other? I will go slowly with intros and maybe try the car ride approach. I have a ferret nation cage and will be keeping one on the top one on the bottem with the hole covered with a screen. They will only be able to see each other through the small corner that will be screened. Is that enough area to see each other through?

They should do fine together. It's with older chins that you have more issues. I would just let them have playtime together and see what happens, then decide if you need to do an special introductions, but I doubt you will need it. They won't remember each other, but at that age they very rarely have started to display the territorialism that older females do.

Congrats on the new chin!

so if 3/4 months is a good time to do introductions, at what age does it start getting more difficult to do them?

Age depends on the individual chin. I put adults together frequently if they aren't of breeding quality, and I don't want to have one chin sitting in a cage (x 10 or 20), so I'll buddy them up. Some it works with, some it doesn't. But almost always you can put a youngster in with an older guy without too much problem.

I don't think there is a specific age when it gets more difficult, just certain chinnies that make it more difficult. Like kids, when they're babies, their temperaments are pretty chill and they get along with most anyone. Once they start becoming teen and adult chins, and develop a more distinct personality, it can make it difficult to bond one chin to another.

I've bonded three pairs all between the ages of 9 months and 3 years, and only once did I have a chin (he was a year old) that just wouldn't get along. He was a territorial moody son of a gun, and needed a really submissive partner; I didn't have one of those at the time. :)
