Hi. I am new to chinchillas. Now, I have four baby girls and two young males. The girls are great with one another, but the boys are not. One is a standard male, about 4 and 1/2 month-old Stavros. The other one is a mosaic male of 7 month-old , "Adonis, nickname Snowball---pics attached".
Stavros get along with the girls fine, but Adonis is very skittish. The girls don't seem to like him because he tries to mount on them occasionally.
He shakes his butt and tails around the girls. Is that a mating thing? :hello5:
They are caged separately. I bought Stavros first about a month ago, and then Adonis on July 4th. When I let them run around free, they fight a lot and their fur come off. I already have 6 chinchillas, so I don't think that I want to buy more. But, these males need a cage mate. So, I really want them to get along. :handshake::grouphug:please advise me what to do. :please:
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:tantrum:

Are you trying to put the 4 girls and 2 boys in the same cage? Are the boys in separate cages without any females with them? If I'm reading this correctly it sounds like the boys might not get along because they are fighting to mate with the girls.

2 Boys in 1 Cage. Girls are in a Separate Cage.

No. Three girls stay in a chinchilla hotel-style big cage. The youngest girl is still alone in her own cage, but eventually will live with other girls:tantrum:. The boys are separate and have their own cages. I want the boys to stay together.

Some chins just don't get along with other chins. It isn't something you can force.

I'm curious though. You said the male is trying to mount the females. Do they have playtime together? If so, you may already have a pregnant female. Mating can happen in a slit second. If he is mounting her, even for a second, they are mating.

OMG!

Yes, I was letting girls and boys together. I was supervising them, and I don't think that he succeeded. But OMG! I will immediately stop doing it. I am scared because my girls are way too young... :cry3:

Start counting 111 days from now. If no babies come you are in the clear. If so, at least now you know for the future. Either way, different sex playtime is asking for trouble.

As for the boys, you can switch their cages so they can get each other's scent. Once they are ok with that, you can try play time again. Clip both their whiskers until they are bot short, and put out a clean, never used, dust bath. Also, put vanilla on the snout and the base of the tail of both. This will make them smell neutral to each other. It still may not work out, but it never hurts to try. If one tries to go after the other, put the aggressive one in a carrier (still in the play time area) for a few minutes. Then let him out and try again. Keep doing this whenever you need to. If after a few play times it doesn't get any better, or if you see one chinchilla very stressed out, it may be time to quit.

Some people believe that it is hard to keep males together in a cage in the same room as the females because they can sense the females and will fight with the male. I have all boys so I can't weigh in on this opinion, but it would seem legit in some cases. Especially with young males that may be going through puberty.

Yes, the males will likely not get along because they will be competing for mating rights.
If you move their cages to another room where they can't see or hear the girls, you may be able to get them introduced and housed together. However, you would have to leave the cage in the other room permanently.
