This is going to be a little long and I should probably (maybe) put this under chin breeding. Anyway, for about a week or so I have been dealing with a woman who was interested in a young violet male I had that I had discounted the price because he was older than the usual 10-12 weeks. I won't go into the details but we emailed back and forth for awhile. So she finally emailed me back that she found another violet male who was cheaper. She also said that the 'breeder' she got the male from told her next year if she brought the male back so he could use the male for breeding he would give her money back. A 'breeder' (obviously a backyard breeder) who doesn't understand the breeding chins is nothing like breeding dogs or cats.. I emailed her back and told her fine but she did she be endangering her new chin's health and causing his death. She emailed back - 'I don't understand why - he is an 'experienced breeder'. I did get her to join here so since I really don't think she is going to believe me because she figures I am just mad because she did not take my chin could all your RESPONSIBLE "TRUE" breeders tell her why.. Hopefully she will click on this thread.

I am not a breeder, but even I can see tons of problems with such a plan. For one chinchillas have to be quarantined anytime they are brought into a new home with other chins. So, for at least a month her poor little guy would have to sit somewhere at this "breeders" place away from all the other chins. Then, if breeding was planned the male would have to be slowly introduced to whichever female(s) the "breeder" is planning to breed him with. This process along could take a long time. The females may want to kill this male outsider, etc. So... she would be without her chinchilla for easily months while the bonding process happened. Then, it could take a while for the male chin to finally manage to get the female chin pregnant. During this whole time she'd have to count on this breeder taking good care of her chin, he'd be away from her, and everything else. When/if she got her male back in one piece she'd have to start the bonding process with him all over again. Would potentially have to swith his food back over, etc. Basically it would be a big nightmare that could end up with her having a lovely dead, ill, or maimed violet instead of a sweet, loveable, living one.

I am sure there are problems I did not mention, seeing as I have never bred any animal let alone a chin. Seems like an awfully big and stupid risk to take just to get back the initial price of the chin. It also doesn't seem like anything someone legit would even suggest. Why doesn't the "breeder" just keep the chin themselves if they want to continue breeding it? Sound like the breeder is trying to free up a cage and get a free year of care. In fact, he's charging her to care for the chin for a year with the offer of getting her money back for breeding... seems odd to me.

Uggggg...how does the experienced breeder even know that this animal he is selling will be up to par for breeding when the chin is older? This is a real problem with mutations like violets. Just because it is a violet in mutation it doesn't mean that it SHOULD be bred. How does she know that it's even a violet? LOL If this guy is using such a strategy for breeding, how does anyone know that he can even figure out the intricacies of breeding recessives?

I've seen chins that have been sold as babies to just grow out to be spectacular. I tell people that I would be more than happy to take those back later on! But, that's different, I think. :p

A good breeder is NEVER in a hurry to sell any chinchilla and does not get angry about someone going with someone else. That's because a good breeder would rather that his or her animals do not end up with people that are merely bargain shopping. You can tell her this. Honestly, I have people do this to me all the time and I always feel like I dodged a bullet. I want people to actually love one of my chins and not feel like they are just getting a deal. Although, most of the time I am cheaper than the backyard and other breeders...

Don't get mad, feel lucky that she didn't get your precious baby and that you get to find him a truly wonderful home.

I didn't know if I should have said that but I am VERY glad she did not get the violet. He is a love but only pet quality. That is why he is cheaper. I held on to him and his sister 'to grow out' - I made the decision that he was pet quality after several months and am selling him as that.

I understand completely about being annoyed by people like this. I have a lot of wonderful customers and people that I enjoy dealing with, but it just takes one super annoying person to screw up my mood. That's a shame, isn't it?

yes it is I feel the same - some customers are absolutely wonderful and love their chin and take really good care of it. Others make you feel like screaming. With the same violet boy I had one who asked why he was cheaper than other people were selling violets. She said she was very interested in the violet and was not complaining about the price. I told her the truth - that he was older and the reason why he was older. I explained that after keeping him awhile to see how he turned out, I realized he was too small for breeding and his coat was not plush enough, that he was pet quality Now her in mind, the violet was 'inferior' and she did not want him anymore - Talk about feeling like screaming!!! I guess she wanted show quality with pet quality prices.

But, he's healthy and he would make a good pet for someone. That's what she wanted after all. I hope that she does not return the other violet once she gets him from that other breeder. After all is said and done and everyone gets over being annoyed the most important thing is that that little animal gets a good home with proper care.
