I have always had animals drawn to me, ever since I was little, but my father has a very strong opposition to cats. :tantrum:Me being me, I can't help it.
For the last few weeks this darling black stray has been lingering around my house.
Today I decided to give him water. He came over, and before I knew it, he was my best friend.
It was like He was meant to be my cat.

My question is, how do you get him to leave? He looks skinny, but I don't want to feed him and further encourage him to stay.

I really don't want to leave him to wander, as he truly is a sweetheart.
Help???

Either feed him or find a shelter to take him. Those are really your only two choices. Unless you are deliberately cruel to him to scare him away, he's going to stick around for a while.

I, personally, could not have a thin animal wandering around my property. I don't like cats. I am all catted out after having 20 at a time because pregnant cats kept getting dumped on my property. I still fed all of them and vetted all of them, because I won't see any animal starve. I realize this is harder since you live at home, but I couldn't live with myself if an animal starved on my watch.

You don't have to take him to a shelter. Our shelter puts you on a very long waiting list anyway, it takes 1-2 months to get a animal in there. You always have the option of finding him a home yourself through Craigs List or your classified ads.

Good luck with that. People here and in surrounding states can't get rid of purebred cats, let alone strays that may or may not have health problems.

Four little words to live by - Spay or Neuter people.

Living out in the country we have cats show up now and then and the only thing that works is we stand out in front of the grocery store with a free sign and the cats/kittens in a open cage where they can be seen. It's not any fun but I force myself to stay and try for up to 4 hours. Only one time it didn't work.

Where I live there is a severe problem with stray cats. It's enough of a problem that the city has our zip code in place for free spay/neuter on all cats brought in. They fix them and give them back to us to let them go.

As for your skinny cat, I would feed him at least. I know that may make him hang around, but it doesn't mean you have to be the only one feeding him. Stray cats are usually pretty good at fending for themselves and hunting to get their food. The food you give him may just give him that energy boost he needs to find some food on his own.

Good one, Dustbunnie!

Definitely feed this cat and find him a home somewhere. As others said, a shelter or a home or give him a place to stay and keep warm outside at your house. But he probably needs to be vetted for parasites and a neutering. Poor kitty. Please give him some food and water for now until you can think of something to do with him.

I can think of a few "people" I would like to spay or neuter. LOL. I live right by a dump and guess what they "dump" cats here all the time. Shelters are all full here and Craigs List is useless here also. IF you decide to feed the poor cat, I would and have, now I have 4 cats( I am not a cat person) I would then Vet it, if you call a Vet around you they may have a discount for a stray or may know where you can take the poor guy.

Well, the problem is I live on a circle, and people around here have a lot of cats. I gave him some food, and he seemed very grateful. Unfortunately the neighbor's boxer scared her off. (We did find out it was a girl). I'm hoping she comes back. A friend of mine is going to take her in, as she has a soft spot for rescues, and we go to the same school.

I would never intentionally harm, or threaten an animal to scare them. It's just not the way I am. She will be in good hands if she shows back up.

Thanks for the advice guys. Keep your fingers crossed that she will turn back up and take well to my friend.

Exactly....if we spay the people that dump cats, they can't breed and raise more people that will dump cats....problem solved :)

Think about it: if you spay and neuter people, there will be fewer idiots who don't spay and neuter their cats/dogs!!

Two stray girls adopted my husband and I at our old house, and then they had 9 kittens (combined). We just adopted out the last of the kittens this past weekend, and they were born in late April. Adopting out cats is not easy right now; there are just so many of them. See if you can find a family friend who needs a mouser. Our two stray mommas still live with us, but they are mousers.

Once you show them kindness, most animals won't leave. However, it does sound like he was someone's pet at one point in time, since he's so friendly. You might try putting up a "FOUND" notice on CL or at local stores.

Best of luck!!!

As of yesterday, we found out he is actually a she. She did come back this morning, and I gave her some cat food that I had. According to my neighbors, she has been here for quite some time, but was very shy.

:hmm:I have considered putting her on CL in the found section, but with it being close to Halloween, and knowing the people in my town, I feel like it would be a bad idea. For now I will take care of her, and she will be an outside cat until I either (magically) get the ok from my parents or until I can find her a home on my own.

I'll try to get some pics up. She has nice fur, just is a bit underweight.
